We've been looking forward to the arrival of Cosmosis Festival ever since it's arrival was announced towards the end of last year. Taking over Manchester's Victoria Warehouse on March 12th, the team behind the festival have delivered a searing line up of alternative, psychedelic rock, with healthy doses of shoegaze, modern classical, and twisted electronica.
Held across four stages, the line up has continued to grow over the past few months with nigh on 50 acts hooked in for the all-dayer. With so much quality on the bill, we've homed in on five acts you simply can't afford to miss. Head here to check out the full Cosmosis Festival line up.
An obvious choice, but a necessary one all the same, Jesus and Mary Chain are one of the most potent live acts out there. Ranging between earsplitting feedback and soul-enriching melodies, expect to be blown away by a wall of glorious noise as they work through their seminal back catalogue. Watch 'April Skies' above.
The sheer ambition of Montreal's sound alone makes them essential viewing wherever they play. Taking in experimental pop, glam, punk, prog rock and the right amount of country whilst being resolutely weird in the process, the Georgian quintet are a riot of confusing, uplifting ideas, complex but totally irresistible in full flow. Get a feel for them in 'Bassem Sabry' above.
Lush, warm, hypnotic, ethereal, and staggeringly beautiful - the music of Ulrich Schnauss is life-affirming stuff, informed by bands as wide ranging as My Bloody Valentine, Tangerine Dream, Slowdive and Cocteau Twins, whilst maintaining an electronic heartbeat that drifts into breaks, mellow techno and digital dream pop territory. Prepare to be hit right in the feels. Listen to 'Stars' above.
The Manchester four piece enjoyed a monstrous year in 2015, with a US tour and sophomore album Wild Nights enjoying a deluge of critical plaudits. Their stoned, fuzzy, measured indie oozes cool and has in a relatively short space of time commanded them a fervent following, as the band continue to deliver an energetic sound steeped in refined, masterful songwriting. Watch their session on KEXP above.
Born very much from the shoegaze and alt rock of the early nineties, Danish duo Raveonettes have continually expanded their sound since their breakthrough in 2001, delivering sublime pop melodies under a thick fog of fuzzy guitars, chunky retro percussion and the intoxicating vocals of Sune Rose Wagner. Listen to 'Endless Sleeper' above.
