The city of Salford has birthed many a musical great including Peter Hook, Shaun Ryder and Tim Burgess, and while, yes, it may live in the shadow of neighbouring Manchester, the city has a great deal to offer culturally. That's where Sounds From The Other City has stepped in. Since 2005, the festival has given the opportunity for grassroots acts to perform across multiple venues in Salford, with a heap of top-class curators involved with the lineup.
Naturally, since its humble beginnings the festival has swollen in size, however still takes place across just one day on the May bank holiday weekend. This year, on Sunday 30th April, a bumper Sounds From The Other City line up, picked by the likes of Heavenly recordings, Now Wave, Bad Uncle and more, will descend upon the 'other' city for a glorious day of music. We've handpicked five acts who are set to make this year's event as special as ever.
Horsebeach

The brainchild of singer-songwriter Ryan Kennedy, Horsebeach are the sort of shimmering, jangly, indie slacker outfit who will undoubtedly make your life a much better place. Third studio effort Beauty & Sadness was launched in early March, adding to a melting pot of sparkling guitar tones, ambient synths and soaring choruses. Their headline show at Islington Mill will be a truly immersive affair and simply unmissable.

Goat Girl

Goat Girl are unsurprisingly taking on the festival circuit this season, and within their long list of appearances, they'll be bringing their sleazy and grungy brand of surf rock to Salford's Islington Mill this year. Vocals so dark and monotonous that they become almost hypnotic are combined with repetitive drones of guitar, creating an original sound differing from the generic guitar bands dominating stages. The band are so hot that they trended on twitter after they dropped their debut single, it's no wonder Rough Trade snatched them up.
Lorna Gray
Flamingods

With members who are half half-Turkish and half-Bahraini, some who are half-Jamaican, half Indian, and one from Wales; there's plenty of influences dovetailing to create the unique sound of Flamingods. Their musical exploration and experimentation amounts to a bubbling psychedelia that borrows instrumentation from various cultures and merges it with otherworldly guitar licks and delicate vocals. They take on Unit 2, Regent Trading Estate with a headline show and are set to transform it into a world away from reality with ease.

Sex Swing
Find Sex Swing tickets
Formed by members of Mugstar, Part Chimp and more, you can expect loud, dark and heavy noise from Sex Swing. With obscure and classic psychedelic elements similar to Spiritualized fused together with eerie use of the organ and disjointed vocals, Sex Swing have an unpredictable sound - and even more unpredictable live presence. Their shadowy noise creeps into unexpected clamours and crescendos of frenzied guitar, crash cymbals and even the inclusion of a saxophone, the end result being a chaotic brand of punk noise.

Hannah Peel

The multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter possesses an ethereal voice and an ability to construct songs in a beautiful way. Electronic percussion and subtle synths are the perfect foil for Hannah Peel's glorious vocals on her third record Awake but Always Dreaming, which came out last year. Coming to St Phillips Church for the festival, the stage is set for her to wow audiences in surroundings that lend themselves perfectly to the artist.
