Sonny Wharton returns to the Wickerman Festival on July 23rd, bringing his three-deck wizardry to the Skiddle.com tent in the Bass Camp. We caught up with him to talk Wickerman, festival tips, and the end of the world.
Have you played at The Wickerman Festival before? What’s your best memory of it?
Certainly have and its THE main festival I look forward to playing every year... tricky to choose a best memory but I think probably X-Press 2’s set a couple of years ago - after 24hours from hell the day before everything just seemed to come together that night and the whole tent was going off... it was a magical moment to spend with everyone involved in putting it together, and definitely one I’ll remember for a long time!
What can the crowd expect from your set?
Lots of energy! I’m lucky enough to be playing two sets this year - one on the Friday before Riva Starr and then a special "10 years of Wickerman" set on the Saturday, which is gonna pretty much be one hour of as many people’s festival favourites as I can fit in!
How does your set differ when you’re playing at a festival to when you play in clubs?
Festivals are generally a lot more about the party, and everyone wants to have fun so the sets are kinda more focused on that I suppose. They don’t really differ that much but there’s definitely more of an element of getting straight to the point rather than slowly building it.
This is the Wickerman’s tenth anniversary. Can you remember what you were doing ten years ago?
Ten years ago I was working for a sound and lighting company in Mid Wales, dreaming of being a DJ!
Have you had chance to look at the rest of The Wickerman line-up? Anyone else you’re looking forward to seeing?
The lineup is amazing this year... loads of people I want to see. Yasmin, Ems Imagination, Tha Damned and Feeder as well as Krafty Kuts, X-Press 2, Riva Starr, Utah Saints, Nelski and Mike Hulme in Bass Camp!
What’s your top festival survival tip?
Stoats Porridge will see you through!
What summer tunes are really working well for you at the moment?
My remixes of Temper Trap and Fatboy Slim seem to be doing the trick so far
If you were DJing at the end of the world party and the moment was upon us, what would be the last track you’d ever play?
Radiohead - 'Everything In Its Right Place'.
What are you hoping the next few years will bring?
Sunshine!
And finally, what makes a great DJ?
The ability to make people dance.
Thanks Sonny, see you at Wickerman!
