For The Record: The Lovely Eggs, 'we’re on a crusade against bullshit'

A lo-fi psych punk duo from Lancaster, The Lovely Eggs consist of married couple Holly Ross and David Blackwell.

Earlier this year the band scored a 'complete shock' number one in the official UK physical singles chart with 'This Decision', pipping the likes of Gerry Cinnamon and Pet Shop Boys to the top spot.

The track features on their sixth album, I Am Moron, which reached the top of the the UK Independent Album and Vinyl charts and was named Album of the Day by BBC 6Music.

They say: "For the last two years we’ve sat back and watched England and the rest of the planet slowly eat itself. Our new album, ‘I am Moron’, is the result of these observations and an analysis of a modern culture bringing the world to its knees.

"We don’t have a booking agent, manager, record label or publisher, so we’re truly independent, and we’re selling out out bigger and bigger venues as more eggheads joins us in our crusade against bullshit.”

Is there a record you can't stop playing right now?

“‘Everything is Bullshit’ by Particle Kid seems pretty relevant right now.’

How many records do you personally own?

"It depends if you count CDs, but vinyl we’d say around 600. With everything included it’s more like 2000.”

What’s the weirdest, rarest or most expensive record you own?

“Probably the American pressing of ‘Markley: A Group’. We think it’s been repressed now but at the time it was an extremely rare record to find and expensive if you lived here in the UK. Luckily we found one in a tiny little record store in Memphis. Nice find that.”

If you could play only one record for the rest of your life, what would it be?

“This is a hard one! Maybe ‘A Love Supreme’ by John Coltrane.”

“Baked Beans.”

Do you have a musical guilty pleasure?

“‘Wicked Game’ by Chris Isaac. It’s a stone cold classic. Also Jazz 24!”

Best live performance you’ve ever seen?

“Probably The Make-Up in Liverpool. Either that or when a jazz band played ‘Girl from Ipanema’ over and over again for hours inside a metal cage while people slowly filled it with balloons. Totally surreal.”

If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be?

"John Cale would be a good one."
