Gorgon City: It's a lot of fun!

Gorgon City discuss a festival season that includes SW4, dates in Ibiza and debuts for Circus and tectonic Sound.

In amongst the bumper additions to Clapham Common’s finest festival SW4 was the production duo Gorgon City, consisting of Foamo and Rack N Ruin. The duo have seen their usual bass driven soundscapes evolve since making music together in the past eighteen months towards a sassier house sound, seeing them get the high profile support of Annie Mac, Pete Tong and even Nick Grimshaw in near unilateral love from BBC Radio One for single 'Real', featuring Yasmin.

With the duo also set to make debuts this month at Liverpool institution Circus and Sheffield newbies Tectonic Sound, and a jam packed Ibiza and festival circuit all to come, we pinned them down for sixty seconds to get the skinny on everything rocking their worlds. They discussed North American tours, the support of their record label and whether the white isle was still the place to be...

Hi guys! Thanks for speaking to us, you must be pretty busy with the release of latest single ‘Intentions’. Can you tell us what the record is based on?

The idea came about after we remixed 'Nightingale' by Clean Bandit for Black Butter Records. We thought it would be great to collaborate with them, our management made it happen and the track is the result!

Were you surprised with how successful ‘Real’ was? How did it feel getting the support of BBC Radio One’s Grimmy?

Yes very much so. We knew it was a cool track and that Yasmins' vocal is amazing, but we never thought it would get so much Radio One love...

So how exactly did the two of you first come to start working together? Has there always been a conscious decision to make different music than you would from a solo perspective?

After DJing at the same shows we had the idea to work together in the studio. There wasn't at first but after our sound started to change the new direction came naturally. It's a lot of fun!

You’re currently on a tour of North America. What’s your take on the way they have taken to dance music over there and do you think it’s a love affair that is set to last?

We just got back and it was amazing. They are really getting into the new sound and it looks like the confidence in the promoters is there. Hopefully the crowds will keep getting bigger and better.

Closer to this side of the ocean, we've noticed that you have two debuts coming up later this month, first for Tectonic Sound in Sheffield and then Circus in Liverpool. How much of an understanding have you got about the clubs and have you played together or individually in the cities before?

We've both played in the cities separately but never together. We're really looking forward to both. Circus in Liverpool is a big one and we're really happy to be on the line-up.

Where else can we see you both playing in the future?

Pretty much at every festival in UK and in Ibiza 8 times this summer. Check our tour dates on Facebook.

The sun is shining up here in Skiddle towers and it's naturally got us dreaming of Festival season. Where are you playing this summer?

As we said, everywhere. Glastonbury, Secret Garden, Hideout, Global Gathering, SW4 and loads more!

It's also made us think of Ibiza! We've clocked solo dates at We Love and a Black Butter residency at Carl Cox's revolution parties both at Space. Are you playing anywhere else on the island this season and is Ibiza still the must-go party destination?

Yes we're also doing Ibiza Rocks and a big Radio 1 weekender party at Privilege. Yes; Ibiza is still the one!

Whilst on the issue of the label, how useful is it being involved with a strong imprint such as Black Butter? Do you think that the success of yourselves, Rudimental and then looking further afield the likes of Katy B on Rinse, needs the backing of imprints that understand the roots of electronic music?

Yes it's important that the people who are pushing you and your music understand where it's coming from. The better the knowledge of the music's roots, the better the knowledge of how it will/should develop.

And finally, what else lies in the future for you both?

From us expect more releases over the summer!
