Low Steppa has undoubtedly become one of the most influential and vital House music artists of the present day. One of his biggest successes to date has been his record label Simma Black which has dominated the Beatport chart and now features a roster of acclaimed artists and producers.

A frequent voice on Rinse FM, his own tracks have been played on Kiss FM, Capital and BBC Radio 1 Xtra. Ahead of his set at Highest Point Festival this year, we thought we’d ask exactly what the people can expect from a Low Steppa show. Continue reading to learn what he had to say...

You're playing at Highest Point this year in Lancaster, what can people expect from your set?

"We need good vibes after these last few years, we have a lot of partying to catch up on so it's uplifting all the way from me!"

-

What has been the most memorable gig of your career so far?

"One that always springs to mind was around 2009 when I went to Japan to play the legendary Womb club, was just an amazing experience and at the time I hadn't really travelled much at all so just blew my mind!"

If you could sign anyone to Simma Black right now, who would it be?

"Big question! I'd love to have a track off one of my heroes like Louie Vega, we have had Todd Terry on the label that was a great feeling."

What was it that first got you into DJing and what was the first track that you really remember connecting with?

"Listening to those old cassettes was what first got me interested, I was about 14 I think at the time then I started listening to Radio One In The Jungle and hearing mixes by people like Funkmaster Flex on the Hip Hop show too. Danny Rampling's show on Radio One was what really paved the way for me though."

-

What is it that keeps DJing exciting for you?

"The energy I feel from the crowd, having a good sound system so I can feel the music properly too. New music, being inspired is crucial for the studio and for playing sets."

-

You've played in Ibiza a lot, what are some of your favourite memories from the island?

"The best will always be my first time, in 2004 I think it was. We did Pacha, Space Terrace, El Divino, but I think at that time I loved hanging out at Bora Bora. It was weird and wonderful."

What other live shows do you have coming up in 2022?

"I'm off to Australia next week then I'm back end of April for the Defected Ibiza opening at Eden, early start this season and some mint times ahead! I'm at Parklife, Creamfields, Forbidden Forest, and loads more. 2022 is going to be one for the books and we all need it after the last few years!"

-

What releases do you have on the horizon?

"I've got a new track coming up with Queen Rose, a nice spoken vocal house track, nice and classic and then I've got so many bits to finish off but don't worry there will be plenty of bangers coming. I want to mix things up and experiment a bit more again this year though for sure."

We look forward to seeing Low Steppa play Highest Point Festival this year, you can find tickets here.
