Over the years Hot 8 Brass Band's sound has been widely lauded by a plethora of tastemakers. They've rocked festivals like Soundwave and Glastonbury, peppered the sets and shows of Gilles Peterson and Craig Charles and brought their sweat drenched, energetic take on funk and jazz to the masses.

Vicennial (stream above on Spotify) celebrates the group marking 20 years of activity, as their endless performances in the streets and clubs of New Orleans have become a worldwide draw. Part of that has been down to their inimitable and superlative covers of classics, but the primal musicianship that makes them unique is the real selling point here.

Sure the instant recognition you feel when hearing either trademark opener 'What's my Name (Rock with the Hot 8)' or Marvin Gaye cover 'Sexual Healing' has it's own novel appeal, but it's what each rip roaring rendition adds to the original that really sets the group apart.

The former plays on the riff to Snoop Dogg's trademark jam to add their own declaration, the latter adding a sweaty sexuality which goes long beyond Marvin's sensuous electronic grip. Each song bristles with energy and glorious chest thumping advocacy for the New Orleans marching band traditions. If you aren't yet seduced by their charm, this is the perfect introduction.
