DJ and Producer Tim Mason is already no stranger to the lime light, and even bigger things are set for him through 2013. From touring across North America, Europe and Asia on his ‘Roll Call Tour’ and being signed to Steve Angello’s Size Records, there is no stopping this Brighton talent.
He’s all set to play Cream in Liverpool on Saturday March 2nd, and with his next release ‘Swoon’ out today on Size Records causing quite the internet stir right now - as well as huge BBC radio One support from Pete tong and Danny Howard - we thought it right to get a few words in with him.
Going back to how it all began, how was it that you ended up being signed to a label as HUGE as Steve Angello’s Size Records?
It was after I had finished ‘The Moment’ - I thought it was the right label for it. Steve heard it and it all started off from there.
Did you already have a close relationship with one third of SHM, Steve Angello?
We’d crossed paths a few times but no I wouldn’t say so.
Speaking of your music productions, if you could choose two words that sum up your sound, what would they be?
Progressive and vibey.
When you’re kicking back and having some personal time listening to music, how wide and varied is the music range you listen to?
I listen to a lot of music when I’m busy and chilling - from Coldplay to Chic!
You have supported some majorly enormous artists in the business from Tiesto to Calvin Harris; do you have any comical stories from when you have been on the road together?
(Laughs) yes there’s quite a few. I must say Tiesto is very good at telling jokes.
At the end of last year you completed your ‘Roll Call Tour’ across North America, Europe and Asia. Where would you say were your ideal places that you visited and did you get up to anything else whilst touring, other than playing at some amazing venues such as Ministry of Sound, EDC Las Vegas and San Diego Sports Arena?
Panama City was amazing, as well as Miami and NYC, but some of the best nights on the ‘Roll Call Tour’ were pretty unexpected like playing my second set of the night for the after party, in Dunkirk, Indiana, where that place went off. I hadn’t slept for 24 hours and played three times, the crowd was a real pick me up that night. I had Tiesto throwing wedges of lemons at me and I didn’t have a clue what was happening, (laughs). Every now and then you have a few days off in some nice places and I try and stop myself working for a few hours to get some sun or see some things. Mexico was pretty cool for chilling!
The new track ‘Swoon’ has seen getting big support from major players like Tiesto and Pete Tong, and it’s a very big festival style sound. Is this the musical direction you’ll continue to take in 2013?
I wrote this record a year ago! As far as direction is concerned it all depends on what is inspiring me when I’m touring and being in the studio.
You will be playing at Cream in Liverpool on March 2nd where you will be in the Main Room, alongside Nicky Romero, Eddie Halliwell, Third Party and Gareth Wyn. This is your first time playing at the UK venue - do you have anything special planned? And what other artists will you enjoy watching?
Yes, maybe best not to reveal much though. Certainly Third Party, it’s always fun hanging out with the boys!
You played for Cream at Amnesia in Ibiza last year; will you be returning to the island this year?
Yes, and very much so looking forward to it!
What’s next for you Tim Mason? Any music productions, more touring or any festivals in 2013?
Yes, I’m quite excited to be returning to some of my favourite festivals for 2013! Also got more singles, a few collabs and remixes along the way.
Catch Tim Mason at Cream in Liverpool on March 2nd with Nicky Romero, Eddie Halliwell, Third Party and more. Tickets are on sale now through Skiddle.
