It goes without saying that the Jungle Brothers pioneered the fusion of hip hop and jazz during the late eighties and early nineties, locking horns with eulogized rap outfits De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest in that space. They resurface as part of a selective tour schedule that starts at London's The Jazz Cafe on Thursday 25th September before ending at Newcastle's Hoochie Coochie on Sunday 5th October.
Mike Gee, Baby Bam and DJ Sammy B came together under the Jungle Brothers moniker during the mid 80's, premiering their inaugural longplayer Straight Out Of The Jungle in 1989. The albums afrocentic leanings lent themselves to similar values of the Native Tongue Posse, made up of Afrika Bambaataa, Queen Latifah, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, of which they became a part of.
In tandem with their innovative brand of hip hop (listen to some of that above), the brothers also lay to the claim that they were the first to thread the genre together with house music, collaborating with the pioneering house god, Toddy Terry- formatively known as hip-house. Six albums followed for the rap stars before a greatest hits album in 2005, which documented a hallmark selection of their jazz infused rap tunes.
