Roddy Woomble of indie rockers Idlewild first heard Karine Polwart’s song “Start It All Over Again”, co-written with John McCusker, on a Battlefield Band album four years ago. He picked it later as one of his top ten favourite songs in an NME article, alongside classics by Lou Reed and The Ramones. Karine Polwart says:
“John McCusker phoned me up and told me to get hold of a copy of the latest NME, which I hadn’t bought in years. Neither of us could believe that this cool guy had even heard of Battlefield Band let alone actually liked the stuff.”
But Roddy Woomble, it transpires, is a lifelong folk music fan, counting Fairport Convention amongst his biggest musical influences. In a neat full circle that reveals a great deal about the current spirit of collaboration on the Scottish music scene, he records a solo folk album next month with John McCusker at the production helm and co-writing input from Polwart. Meantime Roddy’s guest appearance with The Karine Polwart Band at The Garage on January 21st as part of Celtic Connections will allow him to show off one of the new songs he’s written with her, join Karine on one of her own songs and add his voice to a setting of an Edwin Morgan poem for another exciting collaborative project. Karine says:
“Roddy is also working on an album of poems by Scottish poets set to music by Scottish musicians, which will be recorded in the Spring. The likes of Belle and Sebastian and James Yorkston are involved so I’m really chuffed to be part of it. And Edwin’s poem is just beautiful.”
