They put up a good fight, but esteemed Leeds club Canal Mills have finally called it a day.

News of its closure first surfaced in August 2018, when plans for a property redevelopment appeared to spell the end. However, the club - located inside a historic eighteenth century textile mill - was given six more months to live following a lease renegotiation.

Over a year on from that initial announcement and Canal Mills - which first opened its doors back in 2012 - will now cease to operate.

Posting a statement to their social media channels, the team behind the venue said: 'With a very heavy heart we can now say that it's official - Canal Mills has closed its doors.

'Since 2012, our beloved venue has played a huge part in the Leeds music landscape; bringing some of the best artists and events on the planet to the city.

'Thank you to every single one of you for being a part of it, without you, we wouldn't have lasted 7 years.'

Located on Brandon Street, just outside the city centre, the 1,400-capacity venue has welcomed the likes of Elrow and Metropolis to Danielle Moore of Crazy PNorman Jay, drum and bass dons Andy C and Skepsis, and Andrea Olivato name but a few.

Undoubtedly, the closure is a huge loss for Leeds' cultural scene, but the news isn't all doom and gloom. The resolute team behind Canal Mills have already revealed plans for their next step.

They will move forward under a new name - Gradient - bringing the likes of Skream, Mall Grab and Sonny Fodera to venues around the city throughout the remainder of the year.

Glitterbox and Annie Mac presents will also collaborate with the new brand, bringing artists such as Krystal Klear, Kettama, Joey Negro, The Shapeshifters and more to The Warehouse and Mint Warehouse

That's not all. There's also talk of Gradient opening a new venue in the not so distant future. So watch this space.
