Lewis Boardman: "You can imagine the nonsense I've seen!"

Jess Heaton caught up with in demand DJ and producer Lewis Boardman ahead of a very busy couple of months, and talked to him about gigs, Ibiza, Liverpool and a lot more.

Liverpool is about to get one heck of a bonus, what with the reopening of East Village Arts Club, the venue formerly known as the Masque, scheduled in for this weekend. As well as announcing new live music featuring the likes of Big Daddy Kane, The Mystery Jets and The Pharcyde in upcoming months, the two jewels in the city’s clubbing crown, Circus and Chibuku, both return this weekend to open it.

We caught up with Lewis Boardman, a central figure in both of those events, to discuss the new venue and his gig at Circus London in a week’s time. Jess Heaton posed the questions.

Hi Lewis, how are you today?

Very good, very busy!

You appear to of got 2013 off to a flying start with events coming out your ears! You’ll next be seen playing at Circus London’s April event. Are you excited about that?

Circus @ The Egg is always great fun, and every gig down there has been better than the last. I’m especially looking forward to playing alongside Josh Wink & DJ T.

Bringing attentions up north to your hometown; Liverpool, we’re seeing the revitalization of much loved space the Masque transform into the new and shiny East Village Arts Club. You’ll be playing the RebelRave at the regenerated venue on the 5th May, any anticipation or wonder to how the space has been transformed?

I have just been down to have another look around the venue and it looks amazing! It’s been totally transformed and I cannot wait to play there again. It will be great for not only Circus & Chibuku but for the city as it will become the premier live music venue.

What’s your favorite memory of the club over the years?

So so many, I have been in that club nearly every weekend for 10 years, so you can imagine some of the nonsense I have seen over the years.

Where has been the most stand out venue to you and your DJ career? Any little gems that hold a lot of history for you?

In terms of the most stand out venue I would have to say Space in Ibiza. I have had some great times both djing and partying, and the terrace is the best place to play in the world I would say. But I always enjoyed the Circus after show parties in The Magnet. Where I got to play 3 sometimes 4 hours till 7am and was always a good vibe, full of friends, really hot with sweat dripping down the walls and it always went off.

The end of May welcomes Huxley to the city with yourself and Makes No Sense in The Shipping Forecast. Are you guys friendly beyond the decks?

I’ve met Huxley a few times over the years and I’m a huge fan of his music. And the Make No Sense guys are definitely ones to watch with some great stuff lined up.

We see you’re on the line up for Global Gathering again, how did you find last year and who will you be keen to check out this year?

Global was one of the highlights of the year for me last year, fantastic sound and production, an awesome line up and it was red hot all weekend, I’m very lucky to be invited back and have also been asked to play Global Gathering in Belarus alongside Richie Hawtin and Yousef.

How is your summer shaping up? Anything you’d like to share on where you’ll be when the sun is shining. (Can’t promise that for the UK I’m afraid!)

Summer is looking great, I will be resident for Circus Ibiza this summer at Bombas which I’m excited about.

And lastly, any plans for remixes or future releases?

My New EP Skin is out on Monique Musique, next Tuesday (22nd April).

Thank you!
