A four day festival on a beach, in the sun, and far from here doesnt really need selling, but in case you jolted this boutique beauty last year, heres the thing...
The clues in the title: in 2008 a group of folks with a similar take on life packed off to the Adriatic.Among them, top club brands like Leeds Asylum, Birminghams Below and Further travelled with bottomless record bags and an open mind.Add into that some scorching sun and a laissez-faire attitude, and you have the make-up of one of the best new parties of the last few years.Just imagine yourself on the open air terrace amongst scattered trees or inside the tasteful Barbarellas Club: rich in colour, cosy in feel and as different from day-to-day drudgery as you could wish for.
Welcome to Like Minded Festival a much augmented to-do from last year, with many more club nights from the UK and Europe in on things this time around, not to mention the endless list of class acts.
With Croatia yet to join the EU, prices are wallet pleasingly modest; and without the often depressing burdens of commercialism, Like Mindeds focus remains firmly on fun.Lose yourself under the stars on a Dalmatian Coast beach; shift shapes on board one of the boat parties and glide over the crystal waters of this un-blemished party paradise... either way youre sure to become one of the Like Minded family.
Sound tracking this pioneering Nu-Balearic festival is a weighty line up of underground electronicas finest home grown talents.First up is the understated London based boy from Phonica Records, Hector.Working behind the counter at one of the Smokes sharpest record stores has put Hector in the enviable position of having unadulterated access to the hottest house and techno from all over the planet.Known for his ability to hook in a room and never let them go, his arsenal of tunes includes the best from Rhadoo, Dubfire, Ambivalent and more, so expect to be taken on a melodic and nicely kinetic journey.
Then theres Toby Tobias: Rekids man and part of the - debate starter coming up- Disco revival. With his music being rooted in classic American and Italian disco, the added spangly textures and synthetic glows map out some spaced out sonics which are unique to him, but accessible to us all.
Phil Mison alsogets in on the vibe, adding his varied disco cuts into the mix.Mison began at Londons Milk Bar in 1991 , segued into producing after a decade of DJing around the world and touring with bands like Leftfield, and released the first of his Soundcolors compilationsin 95; a groundbreaking series that featured electronic music mixed for mood over traditional beat matching. With a long standing Café Del Mar residency under his belt, he also records as Reverso 68 and Frontera with Pete Herbert.
Leftfield disco man, Herbert, has nestled in on every cosmic group going, stamped his mark and moved on leaving a wake of killer remixes in his path.Expect a little Balearic, a little Italo and a little house, all mixed up with aplomb.
Adding to the atmosphere is Simon Baker, who can happily include Rekids, Playhouse, 2020 Vision and VIVA music amongst his label mates, having released on them all.His Motor City infused tech-house will add a little more energy to proceedings as Baker swerves from his own Radioslave remixes, to his collaborations with Jamie Jones via some knife edged electro.
Next is one of the best resident DJs in the country. He has a knack for subtly weaving lazy, lo end house tunes with crowd pleasing drops and hooks scattered throughout: Tristan Da Cunha is an under rated gem. Also popping over from Leeds Back to Basics is Buckley, an experienced artist with years of house history influencing his sets, and with interesting results.
The well aged institution of disco dandiness, techno roughness and minimal melodies that is Asylum is represented by PBR Streetgang who cut their teeth warming up the Asylum disciples before uber-acts like Prins Thomas, X-press 2, Timo Mass and Theo Parish.Their skills, then, need not be questioned.
Adam Shelton is the successful promoter of Birminghams freshest warehouse party, Below. Showcasing the best of the house and techno talent breaking through, as well as giving a stage to some of the scenes finest, its clear Shelton knows his musical business.
As the names keep coming, the sounds diversify: as demonstrated by the inclusion of self proclaimed cut and shut champs, Furthers Discomendments.Re-edit specialists who slice and dice disco, theyre due to release some cheeky 12s in conjunction with the Garden Festival later this year, and have recently seen Crazy P, Rune Lindbaek and Horse Meat Disco all nod in their direction.
Add in to that the party-starting antics of Birmingham group Chicks Dig Jerks wholl raucously spin anything from geek rock to dubstep, and have welcomed breakthrough energetic indie acts like Gossip and Klaxons to their home city before anyone else, and youve a jolly good time waiting for you in paradise.
There isnt a single reason amongst the above chatter not to accept, with thanks, an invitation to one of musics most bespoke and bedazzling festivals, from an assemblage of unspoiled clubbers wholl welcome you with open arms...
