October sees Liverpool Music Week reach its 10th edition. In customary fashion it has announced a fitting line up of impressive bands, rolled out across the city's cultural hubs to produce yet another spectacular week of music from across the spectrum, and the much anticipated headliners certainly live up to expectation.
It's important that the landmark week gets off to a flying start and if you're into beautiful alternative psychedelia then you'll be well acquainted with opening headliners Caribou, who combines electro-pop with swirling ambiance and addictive rhythms with broken drum patterns to create wonderfully off kilter, feel good music, see what we mean below.
Adding to the Canadian psych-pop mainstay on day one is a live set from down tempo twisted hip hop producer Evian Christ, experimental London based musician Patten and Canadian songwriter Jessy Lanza continuing the electronic theme. Grab your tickets for the opener here.
Heading up the second day are post-rock trailblazers Mogwai. Expect to be encapsulated by extended guitar riffs of pure brilliance that sway between varying dynamics of tone. An output of these sorts has given the longstanding Scots a mysterious demeanour that remains absolutely timeless.
They are bolstered by Wirral based producer Forest Swords who will be airing his guitar fueled experimental beats in an unmissable live set. Psychedelic cosmic rock specialists Mugstar round off day two.
The first offering from Liverpool's 02 Academy is an injection of indie rock from Kendal four piece Wild Beasts. Lead Hayden's distinct scintillating vocals twinned up with underlying guitar and mellow synth based electro finalised by intelligent percussion amasses to a unique and rapturous sound that is reflected in their hit 'Wanderlust' below.
Very much at the forefront of attention after a meteoric rise to prominence this year due to their hit 'Red Eyes' (below) is The War On Drugs. Their intricate blend of dazed psychedelic country rock airs a sense of unpredictability, each track gradually blossoms, resonating a feel good presence that is desperately craved from their live performances.
The grand finale sees an impressive ensemble of acts perform across the cultured Baltic Triangle, a perfect setting to end the week's festivities. Headlining the last hurrah will be in demand electro outfit Chvrches. The sparkling voice of Lauren Mayberry combined with memorable piano chords balances perfectly to create a glorious brand of synth-pop that has seen the band gain widespread plaudits, and it is easy to see why below.
The Baltic Triangle will also host a rare appearance from american punk-rockers The Black Lips, whilst folk fans are catered for by English Musician Nick Mulvey and American songwriter EMA. Nguzunguza hit up the crowd with some dance and future bass, with the cryptic happenings of electronic producer Sophie rounding things off superbly. Grab your tickets here.
