Lockdown Sounds: an isolation playlist by Purple Disco Machine

The Dresden-born doyen of disco house selects the ten tracks getting him through isolation

From remixing for Mark Ronson and Dua Lipa to (almost) topping Beatport's all-time Top 100 artist's chart, Dresden-born artist and producer Purple Disco Machine (real name: Tino Piontek) has, over the course of the last decade, become the doyen of disco house.

Breaking through in 2013 with his track, 'My House' (just the twenty million plays on Youtube), a series of wildly successful releases followed, including 'Body Funk', 'Devil In Me', ‘Dished (Male Stripper)’ and two track EP, ‘Emotion’, totalling over 100 million Spotify streams.

He releases his next single 'Hypnotized' (featuring Sophie and The Giants) on April 8th - the first from his upcoming sophomore album being released by Sydney-based label, Sweat It Out.

We asked PDM to put together a 'Lockdown Sounds' playlist for us, featuring the tracks he's been playing most during isolation (you can find the playlist on Spotify here).

Purple Disco Machine (feat. Sophie and the Giants) - 'Hypnotized'

"My new single and a collaboration with a super cool UK indie band called Sophie and the Giants"

Bill Withers - 'Lovely Day'

"We sadly lost one of soul music’s greats (in fact, one of the greats of all music) when the phenomenal Bill Withers passed away earlier this month. I could have chosen so many tracks by him, but as it is in fact a lovely day as I write this, let’s go for this classic."

Thundercat - 'Black Qualls'

"A languid soul funk number from one of the most talented bassists of recent decades. A favourite player for artists like Kendrick Lamar, he sings on this track too."

Kiky Gyan - 'Disco Dancer'

"An Afro disco funk classic. I made my own edit of this to play in my DJ sets."

The Weeknd - 'In Your Eyes'

"I think The Weeknd is probably the best artist in the world right now. He makes pop music cool again."

Breakbot - 'Be Mine Tonight'

"I’ve always had a crush on French dance music as it’s so funky. Breakbot continues the grand tradition with this laid back groover."

Instant Funk - 'I Got My Mind Made Up'

"A playlist is not a playlist in my opinion without at least one Salsoul classic in it. Here is a gem from one of the best ever disco labels."

Purple Disco Machine - 'In My Arms'

"My first single of the year. This one was aimed at the clubs and is a mash up of Al Stewart’s 1970’s soft rock track ‘Year Of The Cat’ and, of course, the vocal from another Salsoul classic."

Winston Surfshirt - 'Show Love'

"I am label buddies with Winston on Sweat It Out Records. I love his jazz-funk hip-hop vibe. I’d love to do a collaboration with him..."
