Manchester musicians come together for charity album 'Thirty One'

An album featuring music from some of Manchester's finest established and upcoming artists  has been released in aid of men's wellbeing charity CALM.

Thirty One brings together 31 rare and exclusive tracks by Manchester acts including including Elbow, Everything Everything, Delphic, I Am Kloot, D/R/U/G/S, Murkage, Bad Lieutenant, Mr Scruff, Lonelady and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Proceeds from sales of the album will go to CALM (the campaign against living miserably), a charity with strong roots in Manchester. All tracks on the album have been donated for free by the artists.

With suicide being the biggest killer of young men in the UK, CALM works to combat the stigma attached with mental health issues through its confidential helpline and website www.thecalmzone.net. CALM was originally launched as a pilot sheme in Manchester in 1997 with the support of Tony Wilson, who went on to become a founding Trustee of the charity in 2006 and actively encouraged the establishment of the charity given the significant number of suicides of young men in Manchester and cities across the North West.

The ambition of Thirty One is to raise sufficient funds to enable CALM to run their national freephone helpline service every night of the week, every day of the year.

The album has been curated and compiled by DJ/Writer Dave Haslam for The Factory Foundation, with art direction by Peter Saville in collaboration with LOVE Creative, and photography by Thomas Cockram.

It features brand new material from artists whose careers stretch back to the post-punk era including Barry Adamson and Durutti Column, as well as a rare live recording of ‘Lippy Kids’ by Elbow, a cover version of Gloworm’s 90s rave classic ‘Carry Me Home’ by Everything Everything, and tracks by BBC 6 Music favourites Plank! and the Whip.

With a wide variety of music that ranges from the bass heavy jump-around sounds of Murkage to the acoustic introspection of Sara Lowes, and I Am Kloot’s haunting reworking of ‘Bigger Wheels’ (recorded especially for the album), Thirty One represents both the rich musical heritage of Manchester and its exciting current scene - and is undoubtedly one of the highest quality compilation albums of recent years.

Thirty One will be celebrated with a special live event at 2022nq on Saturday 14th April. With live performances and DJ sets from some of the artists involved with the album, as well as supporting Manchester artists, CALM presents Thirty One Live will be a chance to enjoy some of Manchester's finest music whilst raising funds for CALM.
