Mozey interview: “One of the best things is coming home to the UK crowd”

We had a chat with Mozey at Creamfields about his American tour with Hedex, festival season, and, of course, Mozey TV.

Date published: 16th Sep 2024

Known for belters like ‘Run’, ‘On The Block’ with Chase & Status, ‘I Can Be Your Future’, ‘Lady Killaz’, and ‘Robocop’, Mozey is not an artist UK DnB fans will be unfamiliar with.

Winner of Best DJ, Best Breakthrough Producer, and the Originally Award, Mozey was the undisputed king of The Drum & Bass Awards 2024. Add to that his massive tunes including his ‘Hey Pookie’ bootleg that’s been huge on the UK rave and festival circuits, and 2024 has definitely been his year.

Easily one of the biggest names in DnB right now, we had a chat with Mozey at Creamfields, ahead of his closing set, about his American tour with Hedex, festival season, and, of course, Mozey TV.

Probably one of the funniest DJs we’ve interviewed so far, before we started, he joked about our interviewer's accent suddenly getting stronger, putting on his own (pretty accurate) Geordie accent. And then…

We’re just going to dive straight into these questions. We’re coming to the end of festival season, what has summer 2024 looked like for you?

"It has been absolutely incredible, I’ve been all over the world, festivals all over the UK and… do you know what? The fact everyone’s been struggling with finances, all that rubbish, they come out and just show up and have a good time it’s amazing. Yeah, it’s been my biggest festival season by far, some amazing shows, amazing crowds, I love It. If you (promoters) could all book me again (for) next year, that’d be swell!"

-

What’s been your favourite memory of the summer?

"Do you know what? One of the best things is being away, playing abroad, and then coming home to the UK crowd. Like You forget they’re on your case, they’re in your inbox (saying) ‘when are you coming home?’ then you come back and they’re all there with cowboy hats and glittery outfits and I’m like, “Bash! Back home again!” Yeah, I love it. I love coming home and playing in front of my crowd."

-

You’ve nearly finished the Hedex tour in America, what city was your favourite?

"So it was my first time going to America so they’re all amazing in their own ways… New York has got my heart. It’s just such a cool place. It feels like London on steroids. It’s amazing. But the crowds have been amazing all over like every single one just brought its own little sparkle. I love it. And the fact that drum and bass over there at the moment is just having is moment, it’s so good."

Mozey with Hedex and Bru-C

The question on everyone’s lips: will we be getting a return of Mozey TV?

"Ah, d’you know what? the amount of effort it takes… like editing and all that…"

-

One more video!

"Like it’s long, I’ll be honest. And when you’ve put your absolute heart and soul into it and you’re like “2,000 views?” I’m like “nah, bruv.” I’m not cut out for this. Like Instagram reels… nah. No, I would love to because I love doing the long-form stuff and you get a little more open with people and they see a little bit more behind-the-scenes but if someone wants to do it all for me, sweet. Until then…"

-

So you did that all yourself, no one editing for you?

"I’m a control freak, like, an absolute control freak. I edit everything myself. I’ve got a videographer with me a lot of the time but I enjoy editing myself. I used to work in post-production so I’m quite into that."

-

Imagine your closing set tonight is reduced to just three sets, what tracks are you playing and why?

"So is the set like six minutes long?"

-

Yeah.

"Bruv, that is the dream!"

-

Your manager couldn’t-

"And the money’s the same?"

-

Yeah, the money’s the same.

"Oh-ho!"

-

Your manager comes up like, “mate, I’m sorry, we’ve only got six minutes.”

"Hahaha. “We’ve only got six minutes!”, mate, if we’ve only got six minutes, I’m not worried about a DJ set haha. “What, why have we only got six minutes? I'm getting out of here” hahaha

"Uh, if I’ve only got three songs, I’d be opening up with the ‘Hey Pookie’ bootleg that I did, it's been going off so I'm starting with that. ‘Hands In The Air’ mid-set because just - two minutes in! Haha, really in the peak moments! Then closing… closing with ‘Robocop’ - me and Evil B, B Live… ah, I’m being really conceited, in’t I? Nothing but Mozey, sorry everyone else."

-

Nah.

"“Nah! Nah! That’s canny like tha!” Haha, she’s gone Geordie again!"

-

Hahaha, nah, we love a Mozey track.

"Thank you! So do I, haha."

-

Haha, so yeah, that was the interview.

"No more questions?"

-

No more questions.

"So, thank you very much!"
