Dan Haywoods New Hawks

Dan Haywoods New Hawks are a collection of songs, and also a band, whose epic scope marries transatlantic cosmic roots music with a poetic and soulful British folk. A rambling, rolling band whose crazed stage presence, with various players swapping instruments and psychic powers amongst themselves, has already assured them cult status.

Haywood himself has been likened to Nick Drake and Mark Kozelek by critics who were running out of superlatives to describe his self-titled debut album, released late in 2010. That LP documents the ornithologist Haywoods five years of bird-and-people-watching during travels around Highland Scotland. He is backed by the New Hawks, whose numbers may vary, but whose musical kinship with their charismatic navigator poet never fades. For this show theyll perform as a nine-piece band, amongst whom will be the New Hawks Manchester based percussionist Paddy Steer, formerly of 808 State and now performing both solo and with Homelife.

A wild-eyed mix of cosmic country and chamber-folk [...] makes for a thrilling noise UNCUT Magazine

There is a hushed elegance and sprightly inventiveness to Haywoods guitar work that is reminiscent of both Mark Kozelek and Nick Drake, but his atypical subject matter and unique vocal delivery is entirely his own, giving these songs both a worn, vintage sound while also injecting them with a thoroughly modern style. Samson & Delilah

A Manchester-based chamber-psyche-folk-rock quintet, whose debut album was nominated for Spiral Earths Best Debut award in 2010. They are led by the songwriting partnership of husband and wife Sam Lench and Anna Zweck, who played as a duo and in several bands within Manchester's burgeoning new-folk scene.

Samson & Delilah went on to release a second full-length record, 'And Straight On Till Morning', which has been featured extensively by Gideon Coe on 6Music and Mike Harding on BBC Radio 2. Immaculately recorded live in a Victorian concert hall, the new album shows the band's assured progression from a duo vehicle for Zweck and Lench to a full band capable of shifting in a heartbeat from mournful piano laments to Byrds-like psyche-drone to uplifting, anthemic crescendos.
