As hip hop labels go, Stones Throw rocks with the best of them. Active since 1996, the imprint was set up by Peanut Butter Wolf to launch the music he and late rapper Charizma had recorded just before he died in 1993. The ensuing years has seen the label go from its original status as a benchmark of the backpacking hip hop community to becoming a multi-national hive of crate digging culture.
It's been the subject of a brand new documentary Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton, for which to you can see the trailer for above. The documentary features interviews with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Common, Talib Kweli, Kanye West, Tyler, The Creator, Ariel Pink, Earl Sweatshirt, Anika and Portishead's Geoff Barrow, each recounting the impact the label has had in their lives.
To help publicise the doc Peanut Butter Wolf is embarking on a European tour, playing a series of special AV sets which showcase not only his acumen in finding the perfect beat but the visual depth of the iconic label's back catalogue, which has raided funk, soul, bossa nova and nigh on every other genre fathomable alongside hip hop since it started. Tickets for the tour are below:
Tuesday 1st April @ The Kazimier, Liverpool (with Fingathing)
Thursday 3rd April @ Plan B, London (with Mr Thing, Alexander Nut & more)
