Those that have caught Venetian Snares in action before will understand the difficulty to put into words just what it is Manitoban beat scientist Aaron Funk does. What is very clear though is that he does it very well in deed.
After being snapped up back in 2001 by one of the most out-there, uncompromising record labels of our times - Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu, Aaron under his Venetian Snares moniker has gone on to deliver an endless stream of surreal and brutal sounds that have explored every cavern of noxious electronic music.
Ranging from the Autechre-esque breakneck glitches of Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding to the hardcore junglism of Detrimentalist, via the orchestral beauty of Hungarian classical music inspired Rossz Csillag Alatt Született (above), Venetian Snares is clearly an auteur never short on creativity.
His most recent work on My Love Is A Bulldozer has seen him almost incorporate elements of Scott Walker's avant garde approach whilst his cut up and deliciously complex, beastly drum patterns underpin the work with all the violence we've come to love from the Winnipeg native.
For his set at The Laundry on November 15th, Venetian Snares will deliver of all the above sounds, and then some. Whilst his albums may give the impression that the Canadian pioneer is really letting loose, it's nothing compared to his live and DJ performances. Expect to experience both fear and exhilaration in equal measure as he exposes feverish IDM heads to a barrage of mindmelting brilliance.
He will be joined by fellow Planet Mu family member Boxcutter, who himself draws from a very deep pool of creative influences. From the grime and off-the-wall industrial dubstep of his Oneiric debut LP to a myriad of experimental dalliances ever since, his strong sense of melody and atmosphere stands out as something very unique to the Irish producer (check out his 'Daylight Saving' record above).
UK queen of breakcore The Doubtful Guest rounds off the line up. Get your Planet Mu tickets here.
