Liverpool has an abundance of unique and unusual venues, something we will touch upon in further detail in an article next week, but few have the iconic history and heart-warming soul of St Luke’s Church. The venue is more popularly known as the ‘Bombed Out’ church, and was as the name suggests ransacked during the Blitz of 1941 by the bombs of the Luftwaffe that rained down on the city.
Despite losing its entire roof during the attacks, as well as several bells, an organ and the vast majority of the ornamental glass that made up the windows, enough of the structure remained for the building to be preserved as a monument to honour those that died in the war, as well as a marker for the defiance of the people of the city.
That heritage has made it one of the well-loved landmarks in the city, and the perfect place to hold summer concerts like Liverpool Calling, which takes place on Sunday 16th June. With Brighton based rockers British Sea Power headlining, they sit at the pinnacle of a smorgasbord of live music talent which enable a mini festival environment in the famous Liverpool venue.
The group’s sixth studio album, Machineries of Joy, was released in April and made the top twenty of the UK albums chart. Joining the group will be Ian Prowse & Amsterdam, The Mono LP's, Oxygen Thieves, Orange Room and many more.
