Rather than simply writing a few songs and shooting to instant fame, Marple based Dutch Uncles have spent the last five years honing their sound to the joy of an ever increasing fan base.
On the surface, Dutch Uncles is pop music at its best, but look a little deeper, and the songcraft of the Stockport five piece reveals an intelligence often missing from their contemporaries. With skewed time signatures, infectious hooks and intriguing lyrical journeys setting them well apart from the crowd, Dutch Uncles have been lauded by music journalists, critics and audiences everywhere.
Dutch Uncles - Cadenza
Their second album, and in many respects, first proper album 'Cadenza' received a huge 7.3/10 from the usually very stingy Pitchfork, 8/10 from BBC Music, Q, and Drowned in Sound, as well as a 4 out of 5 from The Guardian. Since Cadenza's release, the five piece have gone on to carve a unique niche sound that sees them pushing the envelope of how good intelligent pop music can actually get. Their live performances are an absolute joy to behold, with lead singer Duncan Wallis throwing some of the most bizarre and engaging shapes you’ll ever witness a front man!
With a sound that wears influences as broad as XTC, Talking Heads and King Crimson, Dutch Uncles have crafted for themselves through years of hard work, a sound that is a genuine delight to the years. Give your ears a treat and catch these guys in action at Manchester’s Academy 2.
Outfit - Humboldts
They will be joined by Liverpool lads Outfit. Since gaining the attention of the music industry with a couple of well received demos way back in 2011, they finally got an LP together and recorded earlier this year. Labelled by The Guardian as a hedonistic and haunting debut, the album proved to be worth the wait, and one of the highlights of the summer. Clash Music went as far as calling ‘Performance’ one of the years great British albums. Their bizarre mixture of world music, esoteric atmospherics and lo fi rock finesse has really struck a chord the more discerning audiences around the country. They are well worth checking out, as Now Wave once again impress us with their upcoming line up.
