Having previously played host to the likes of Rodriguez Jr. and Danny Howells, Manchester’s Xpansion are back for a third time to the party ready basement of Joshua Brooks, and ready to kick it up a notch with a performance from legendary producer and DJ, Justin Robertson.
Few in the world of dance and alternative music have managed to remain as relevant and as busy as Justin Robertson these past twenty years, and many with a musical heritage in Manchester will have great memories of the man himself. Amongst them, The Chemical Brothers, who through religious attendance to his clubs Spice and Most Excellent, have since cited him as their musical mentor. Having seen a musical landscape change over a decade, Justin has resided in London since the early 00s, but has recently been a Warehouse Project regular. In fact, he was the man entrusted with following The Chemical Brothers' epic three hour main room set last December. No easy task, and now here he is, back down in the intimate basement of Joshua Brooks, doubtlessly armed with a range of full bodied dancefloor weapons.
Despite his Hacienda associations, Robertson is no nostalgia DJ, constantly pushing forward with new projects and exploring new genres. You can hardly expect to hear his love for singer-songwriters emerge from the sweaty mess of JBs, but it’s there, alongside his renowned reggae collection, his balearic side projects... Justin is a true music lover, and a DJ’s DJ. That’s not to say he doesn’t know how to take complete control of a floor and take things up a dial, of course. His remixes of Bjork, Felix Da Housecat and Erol Alkan and Boys Noize are all guaranteed party starters of the highest order, brutally effective re-imaginings from a man who knows a busy dance floor like the back of his hand.
Justin will continue working into 2013 with electronic protege Daniel Avery on brand new material, as well as his Deadstock 33s project and a full as ever international DJ schedule. Always different, never dull, Justin Robertson remains a key figure in the UK house and techno scene.
Justin will be joined on the night by the Xpansionr regulars: Ronson, Stuart James, Orchard, Mike Richardson & Matt Cox, who’ll all be out with tunes fresh and classic to set the musical table for Robertson’s first 2013 visit to Manchester with aplomb.
