Prince Club's effervescent take on house music has been a breath of fresh air in recent times. Although no strangers to the nineties house sound which has swept clubland, they've managed to add enough zest and originality to it, as evidenced by productions on Defected, Toolroom and the legendary 90s label Nervous Records.
It was on the latter that they collaborated with Poupon on 'Before' (listen above), one of the smash records of 2013. Both artists hit Manchester on Saturday 2nd November for No Hassle, taking place in Sound Control. Ahead of the show we caught up with one half of the duo to discuss everything going down in the Prince club world.
Are you looking forward to playing No Hassle at Sound Control in Manchester? How do you find playing to the British crowd?
Yes very much, I have been waiting eagerly for a Prince Club set in Manchester. The city has a reputation for House Music and quality clubbing in general. Also get to play it with our main boy Poupon who we have been collaborating ever since we first met in Toronto. Very promising night, grateful you included us, much respect.
How do you find playing to the British crowd?
Perfect, energetic is the least we can say about you guys. Our stuff works really well here and you feel a genuine interest towards house music in general. Also it's this part of the world where the floor doesn't wait until later to start dancing which is great because you can build in a set without worrying too much about losing the crowd.
Also people really know the classics, God bless the UK!
Have you got anything special planned for your set there?
Just good pure raw house music, a bit of techno, some deeper stuff to calm down the situation if needed and a few curveballs ;)
For those of us that haven’t seen one of your sets, how would you describe them?
Haha pretty much summed it up in the previous question. We like to party; expect lots of originals. By the end of the night, you can expect to hear a lot of Prince Club productions and remixes, which a lot of the time is what people come to hear. Also have a few secret edits we love to throw in to keep it exciting and interesting for the crowd.
You’ve already had a couple of releases out this year on Play it Down and Nurvous records. How have they been received and what further productions can we look forward to?
Both records were really well received. They almost came out back to back and scored really good on the charts. It's funny you mention these two EPs because they have to be the most requested one in our recent gigs. It's good to see some people signing along with "Before" and "Only One", that's exactly why we made them.
Our new Jessie Andrews remix for her track 'I Never Knew' also has been working really well on the floor. I mean, all our tracks are majorly designed for the floor so they all fit one period of the night which is cool because after 3 years of Prince Club productions we are starting to have the right repertoire to play any time slot of the night.
We know that you live in separate parts of the world. Do you find it a challenge to work together on productions with such a distance? How do you work around it?
I think we finally managed to find the right formula. Max pretty much takes care of the whole production side on his own now. He goes with his guts. Every producer knows how much pressure comes from working with labels, especially the ones you aspire to be on. We are fortunate enough to have found a home on an established and helpful label that pushes us and believe in us.
As of lately we have been working closely with Toolroom who have been really effective in putting our music out in the best possible ways. Also we recently released remixes and originals on Defected, Culprit, Great Stuff Recordings, Ultra, Play It Down and Nurvous. 2013 was a good one for us, thanks to everyone involved in the release process.
Where else have you enjoyed playing recently?
Dublin was good fun, Flashmob were also on the bill. The place was packed pretty early and everybody were really up for it. Hotel was nice and after party was messy as we like it. Leeds also was incredible, Mint Club definitely was one of the top venue out here in the UK. Promoters & friends were really cool.
Played Ministry of Sound and Cardiff b2b with Poupon. Again much respect to the Haus 92 crew who launched the night then, bright future for these guys.
What else lies in the future for Prince Club?
We have a track called "What Is House" in the bank, you can catch a glimpse of it in a Youtube video from the show at Button Factory in Dublin. Also included it in our latest Ministry Of Sound promo mix. Max just finished the complementary track for it. Immensely hyped about the final result, shouldn't be too long to come out.
Dream situation time... you can go back to any period in clubland history, and play at any club. Who would you have playing alongside you and what tune would you drop that would define the evening?
Nice, tough one…. It's no secret we are big fan of 90's house so it would have include MK as he was rinsing everything in the early New-York scene. Armand Van Helden would be headlining and we would throw down a very rare warehouse edit we have of his legendary track "U Don't Know Me'.
