With his productions getting regular plays across the globe from the likes of tINI, Enzo Siragusa, Ben Klock and Steve Lawler, his hugely popular edits of Burial and James Blake inspiring widespread interest, and tracks from his debut EP on Baalsaal Records popping up in numerous DJ charts, Samu.l is definitely one to watch.
This Friday he joins Bloody Mary and Adam Shelton at Sound Control, where he'll be treating the Zutekh crowd to his signature stripped-back, deep, bass-driven beats.
So first off, tell us a bit about your musical background, your residency at Cloak and Dagger and how you got into DJing?
When I left school I started collecting records, practicing at home as much as I could until my dad would pull out the fuses… but it was my brother - who runs CnD - who gave me my first DJ set when I was 17. Cloak n Dagger is a wicked platform for me to play each month to a home crowd, brilliant vibe and quirky venues!
This is your first gig at Zutekh. Have you heard much about it?
Yes I have heard great things about Zutekh for some time now, so I'm really looking forward to playing!
How would you describe your music style to anyone that hasn’t heard you play before? Does it differ in any way from your production sound?
It is predominantly deep tech house, and I do tend to play types of tracks on similar vibes to my own production sound.
You were brought up near Birmingham and no doubt took plenty of influence from Adam Shelton and Subb-an and their Below parties. How does it feel to be signed to the label and representing their sound at a One Records party?
Yeh I first went to Below about 5/6 years ago and their sound has always been an influence to me… so I'm buzzing to be playing for the party and to have contributed to the label!
Are there any labels / artists doing good things at the moment you would like to give us the heads up on?
Some of my favourite tracks I'm playing at the moment are coming from friends I have in france and America… also Brett Jacobs is one to watch this summer.
Finally, what is your DJ diary like in the coming months? Where else can we catch you playing?
I'm really looking forward to playing at Fabric in June, and the Saved label night at TRMNL in June also… Fuse tour in July and Below in August!
