Queens Of The Stone Age

Formed from the ashes of stoner rock icons Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age formed in 97, QotSA’s debut album ‘Rated R’ received immediate critical attention for its elaborate instrumentation and arrangements, however it was the run away success of ‘Songs For the Deaf’ that catapulted the band to international superstardom. With Josh Homme at the helm of an ever shifting line up, the talents of the good Dave Grohl were employed for drumming duties, and their commercial breakthrough ensued. QotSA’s eagerly anticipated third album, ‘Lullabies to Paralyse’ missed the input of Nick Oliveri and Mark Lanegan, but gained spots from The Distiller’s Brodie Dalle and ZZTop Guitarist Billy Gibbons. Currently back in the studio recording their forthcoming album ‘Era Vulgaris’, the band are reluctant to reveal who they have been collaborating with, but rumour has it that Nine Inch Nails Trent Reznor and The Stroke’s Julian Casablancas will appear as guest vocalists. Live, QotSA bring an unbelievably kinetic and tight set to the stage, holding any audience spell bound. Diverse and musically ambitious, the Queen’s set will be a revelation to lucky T in the Parkers! The band return to T to close King Tut’s Tent on Sunday.

Lostprophets

Welsh rockers Lostprophets have earned a solid fan base since forming in small town of Pontypridd back in 1997. These alternative rockers released their third studio album ‘Liberation Transmission’ last year from which the sterling singles ‘Rooftops’ and ‘A Town Called Hypocrisy’ were taken, and which won them the ‘Best Album’ gong at the 2006 Kerrang! Awards, before they also swept the ‘Best British Band’ accolade. Recently the band have been making noises that they are about to start recording their fourth album. Fans of their early material will be glad to hear that they plan to revert to a somewhat heavier sound. Lostprophets play Saturday’s Main Stage.

Rufus Wainwright

Another T in the Park debutant is aural enfant terrible Rufus Wainwright. A precocious musical talent, Wainwright began to play the piano at the age of six and was touring with his equally talented sister Martha, along with his mother and aunt as the McGarrigle Sisters and Family by the time he was thirteen. Having escaped the familarial clutches, Wainwright has gone on to secure a cult following, and each of his four solo albums, from his lauded self titled debut through to 2004’s ‘Want Two’ have been released to critical acclaim. Whilst some of his tracks feature only the simplistic beauty of Wainwright’s voice accompanied only by piano, others are accompanied by complex layering, lush harmonics, symphony orchestration, and a clear influence of Wainwright’s love of opera leading critics to term such tracks ‘Popera’ and in some cases ‘Baroque Pop’. A musician’s musician, Wainwright counts Morrissey, Leonard Cohen and and Elton John (who supported Rufus through his infamous Crystal Meth addiction which left him temporarily blinded) and fans and continues to influence artists as diverse as Scissor Sisters and Keane. Wainwright forms part of Saturday’s Pet Sounds Arena bill.

Calvin Harris

Up and coming starlet Calvin Harris is on a one man mission to reinvent disco. So much so his forthcoming debut is modestly entitled ‘I Created Disco’. Made for a meagre 0p in a comfy bedroom in Dumfries, ‘I Created Disco’ released on Harris’ own label, FlyEye, is packed full of banging pop dance tunes soon set (just as the top 10 hit ‘Acceptable in the 80’s’ has been) to become dance anthems. Harris' music has more in common with the early-80s electro-fied version of that sound, this sort of cerebral meta-funk has been a micro-genre on both sides of the Atlantic for a few years now. Due to be propelled into the super stardom stratosphere, Harris has been plucked from relative obscurity to produce Kylie’s forthcoming album, and will accompany Faithless on their spring tour before making a pitstop at T in the Park to play Saturday’s King Tut’s Tent.

Just Jack

Born in North London Jack Allsopp grew up on a diet of dance music including, break dance, electro hip hop and house. A wannabe break dancer at eight, his love of dance music led him to start DJing at the age of fifteen and he soon became submerged in DJ culture and US garage. Jack's debut album, 'The Outer Marker' is a collection of songs about modern life, relationships and the pressures of social situations and received stunning reviews and lead to Jack being saluted by the press as ‘The new troubadour of daily life in the UK’. Tunes like ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ have become instant anthems, choc full of funky disco beats, hip hop sounds, clever demonstrative lyrics, masterful trumpet work and soulful strings – what’s not to love? Catch him in King Tut’s Tent on Sunday.
