Tasha Remington joins the first part of the 21st birthday celebrations of beloved Leeds club night Back to Basics, headlined by the mighty Basement Jaxx.

Leeds is one of the growing cities in the UK. New shopping centres and high-rise buildings are creeping into the main precinct and soon West Yorkshire’s favourite dwelling will boast a new 10,000 capacity venue right in the heart of the city.

However, 21 years ago, long before the fresh retail investment and overlooking residences - was little club night called Back to Basics, started by the illustrious main man himself Dave Beer. Not one to follow trends, Dave and his trusty residents built a foundation on what now lies arguably the most promising house culture in the UK.

The Warehouse was a fitting venue for the 21st anniversary of everyone’s favourite club night, especially since they have not long celebrated their own 33rd birthday - making The Warehouse the oldest dance club in the country.

Another fitting testament to Basics' high profile are headliners Basement Jaxx; who got one of their big breaks performing for Dave when they were on the rise to stardom and have stayed loyal to B2B ever since.

The club as we arrived was packed out with clubbers of all ages - young and old - all directing their disco arms to the DJ booth in sheer anticipation of the duo's set. Without a doubt they delivered, with some energetic drops that throbbed through the Funktion One system. The subby bass married with their famous edits was enough for every punter to walk away from the club with a smile on their face.

It's well worthy of a mention that the crowd have always stayed loyal to Leeds' best kept club brand, pouring into the club week in, week out. It's also true to say that the residents including Ralph Lawson have certainly played their part over the 21 year duration.

If we can all take something away from Basics it should be this. Take life one day at a time, always be keen to be inspired, and always have a good meal in you before heading to the club - as these parties aren’t for the faint hearted, but for the true lovers for the pioneering brand.

Long may it continue…
