Review: Sankeys Fiesta w/ Marco Carola, Leon and Darius Syrossian, 16/02/13

After a hugely successful season debut in Ibiza last year with Music On at Amnesia, Marco Carola is bigger than ever at the moment. Jack Law went along to Sankeys to check out a DJ at the top of his game.

Last weekend saw the Italian techno don return to Sankeys in Manchester, along with fellow countryman Leon and a certain Viva Warrior, Darius Syrossian, both of whom (like Carola himself) are by no means too shy to chug it out.

We arrived soon after midnight to an already bustling club. Squeezing through to the main room, we caught Darius Syrossian coming to the end of his set. The sound of Viva Music was evident with the unique, dirty synths and bass that the Warriors are known for, and the energy in the room was already bouncing.

Leon took over the reigns soon after, with more of the same. The Music On regular has become the perfect warm-up for Carola with his strong, bouncing techno house, rife with build ups and drops that shook the very foundations of the room. He was having a great time, mixing the tunes together a treat and working the crowd into a frenzy over the couple of hours that he played. DJs like Leon are essential when someone such as Marco Carola comes to town; most of us would happily watch him all night long but Leon was really good in the meantime.

When Marco Carola finally arrived, the loyal following were more than ready. Excitement across the room was almost too much and the crowd became all the more energetic within an instant. We relished the punching beats as Carola impeccably mixed an array of efficient techno, laden with strong percussion and a whole lot of groove. He even played a very moody, almost sinister remix of Romanthony's classic 'Let Me Show You Love'. For four hours, he held us captive on the dance floor in a state of happiness; we were getting a long awaited fix of the Carola sound and were loving every second of it.

Time flew by, and before we knew it the end was fast approaching. Over that last half an hour, it got more and more interesting. For that style of techno, the efficient, pumping style, Marco Carola is without doubt the best around and he showcased that through his massive collection of brilliant tunes. There wasn't a second that we weren't fully immersed in the music, and that is what constitutes a DJ set from one of the legends. The man is a genius, and was an absolute pleasure to see in Sankeys, a club which accommodates that sound very well. Next time he's there, we will be too.
