It was with some excitement this summer when we heard the announcement of a new super club opening up in Leeds. As details filtered out - Funktion 1 soundsystem, Geodome lights (watch a demonstration below) and a 3000 capacity I waited eagerly to see what artists might be gracing Control. What happened next dampened my spirits somewhat.
This new venue turned out to be an old and very well known Leeds venue that was undergoing a refurb – Evolution. Evolution has had a colourful past to say the least, a venue more suited to student parties rather than world class DJs. So we were thankfully pleasantly surprised when the line ups came out, particularly enamored with the Solomun and Diynamic showcase.
The Geodome was the first port of call, hosted by local lads Love Not Money, the label represented by a good selection of local DJs. Warming up when we arrived was the up and coming DJ and producer Ethan Marin. He got the party going with a big Ibiza track you will no doubt of heard this summer, Ninetoes 'Finder', before moving on to tech house with tracks from Zohki, Roozlee and Vito towards the end of his set. The Geodome lights on the roof were a nice touch and were quickly a talking point, pulsating in time with the music giving even more life to the room.
Shortly after we crossed over into the main arena to catch the start of Stimming live. Having heard a lot Stimming’s productions but never having seen him live, we were eager to see how his sound translated to a club environment. Although we didn’t recognise a large proportion of the music played, the music was good and set a firm base which Solomun and H.O.S.H. would later build on.
As expected they did just that, Solomun and H.O.S.H. worked seamlessly together bringing up the signature Diynamic sound that has made them so popular the world over. Plenty of vocals laced over contagious beats. Highlights included the classic Solomun remix of Tiefschwarz's 'Corporate Butcher' (below) and Marlon Hoffstadt & Dansson’s 'Shake That'.
If there was any complaint it would be that the sound system in the main room was slightly too loud, losing an element of the clarity. This reviewer is a huge fan of Funktion1 speakers but for clarity we'd hazard that Mint Warehouse’s can't be beaten in Leeds.
For an event of this size, tickets were reasonably priced and easily available. All in all, we're looking forward to another big night at Control soon. The venue would perfectly suit something along the lines of Enter, Cocoon or even a Sci+Tec showcase, but in the mean we're excited of the prospect of Bookashade delivering on the 15th November 2013. Check out Solomun’s legendary opening set from Sankeys Ibiza 2012 for a flavour of his sound, it’s timeless.
