Fresh from playing for the first time at the sensational beach region in Playa Del Carmen for the infamous BPM festival, Nick Curly brought his Trust tour to the upper echelons of Leeds’ clubbing scene, Mint Club. The night featured the main man himself, Nick Curly, alongside, Leftroom boss Matt Tolfrey, Jordan Peak and Randall M.
We caught up with both Nick Curly and Matt Tolfrey prior to the event to discuss their appearances, forthcoming releases and tour dates.
As always when you descend upon the dance floor at Mint there was a warming buzz about the place. From the very beginning the punters had clearly decided to make the most of every single second of the night and were flooding upon the dance floor. The energy was high octane and crescendoing from the word go.
The intimate size and shape of the main room, whether packed or barely filled, always has a feel of a house party with a few hundred of your friends. The Funktion One system was in full force as usual, pounding through the clubs back doors into the outside area.
Tolfrey took to the decks first. This was a hugely anticipated event for us as reviewers as it was the first time we had seen Tolfrey since he span a show stopper on the dance floors of Sankeys Ibiza way back in 2012 at the infamous Carnival event. Seth Troxler's dubbing Tolfrey as the 'last great British DJ' (see why in his Movement Detroit appearance above) couldn't have rung truer at both Sankeys and Mint.
Tolfrey ushered his adoring crowd into the early hours with a fine array of house and techno. From deep Earthy vibes and African drums to the clash of futuristic, metallic, synthesised tones, he well and truly ignited the room into a frenzy. His set enveloped all of the lush, silky melodies and warming basslines you would expect of him.
As the sound of crashing drums and wild melodic beats continued, the crowd grew larger and stronger and showed no signs of tiring as the night continued. As always, his track selection was exquisite and intellectual, displaying his meticulous thought and planning before sets.
As the early morning commenced, Mannheim heavyweight Nick Curly took the reigns and helped the crowd find gears they surely didn't know they could reach (hear his Trust mix in Barcelona above). Curly’s underground, deep, dark, techy vibe flickered through the crowd and resonated from the ceilings all the way to the back. The bass rumbled along and coated the walls in vibrations as he pushed the atmosphere from serious to sinister, cool and calm to crazy.
The event lived up to all the high expectations you would have for both Curly and Tolfrey - overall a very impressive evening, both sonically and atmospherically.
