Review: WHP Events & Kaluki presents Circoloco, 26/01/13

Last Saturday saw Circoloco touch down in Manchester to take over Room Two of Victoria Warehouse (WHP) for a night of quality techno house and a whole lot of hedonistic fun.

Forming the line up were some of the brands heavyweights, including Clive Henry, Tania Vulcano, Matthias Tanzmann and Davide Squillace, with a guest appearance from Hot Creations' Richy Ahmed.

On arrival, being avid Circoloco fans, we went straight to room two of the warehouse, which is where we would stay for the duration. A quick glance at the set times told us we had already missed Clive Henry's set, which was a shame as he always pulls off a good mix up of deep house.

Richy Ahmed was playing to an already very busy crowd; it was a squeeze to get to the front. For a little while, his Hot Creations deep house did little other than bore our socks off, apart from when he played Nicolas Massayeff's 'Mugen', which is a great tune. Tania Vulcano was meant to start at midnight, and we were eagerly waiting for the real Circoloco tunes to start. But midnight came and there was no sign of Tania. Then Richy Ahmed really pulled it out of the bag! His style seemed to change to the techno house we had been waiting for in an instant, to make up for Tania's late arrival. Fair play to the guy, he really got the party started.

When Tania Vulcano herself came on, it all started to get a bit silly. She was playing naughty techno, DC10 favourites like Kat Williams' acid laden 'That Track By Kat' and some sort of remix or acapella of Lolleata Holloway's 'Burning Up', with intense sirens and crazy drum fills. As always, she had thrown us into a whirlwhind of Circoloco madness, ridiculously good music and a serious amount of fun, which Tania was perfect at dishing out. Combine this with the raw space that belongs to the Warehouse Project, and you complete a recipe of brilliance.

The final set of the night was a back to back performance from Matthias Tanzmann & Davide Squillace. The duo have become known for playing together and throughout the season in Ibiza you will catch the two storming DC10 quite regularly. They make it seam so easy as they mix through their moody techno house. Tonight was no different, as percussion clattered heavily around Room Two across groovy bass and trippy chopped up vocals.

They played a range of real good tunes, from interesting and trippy like Jeff Moore & Jamie Lie A Kwie's 'Butt', to dark, driving basslines like Squillace's own 'Pieces of You'. And what Tanzmann & Squillace set would be complete without fellow 'Better Lost Than Stupid' member Martin Buttrich's remix of Shakedown's classic 'At Night'. All in all, there were a stupid amount of top quality tunes mixed impeccably to take us on a hazy journey of Circoloco madness. The only negative about the set was that it had to end at 4am, which was such a shame as we were all having such a great time and could have gone on for hours. That's the thing about WHP, 4am is just so early!

When you see that crazy clown heading to town, you know there's going to be a seriously good party. The Circoloco team know just how to transpose the feelings aroused in DC10 over to different areas of the world; the feelings of hedonism, the feelings of fun and the feelings that you might possibly be going slightly mental! But then it all ends, your sanity returns (eventually) and you are left with the memory (though rather hazy) of an amazing night.
