April 1994 witnessed arguably the greatest album in hip hop history see a release, as Nas' debut offering Illmatic hit stores. 2014 has pretty much been a year long celebration of that release, with a lofty re-release, tour and a documentary; Time is Illmatic, all in circulation.

That short film will be shown in Liverpool venue The Shipping Forecast on Friday 19th December (watch the trailer for it above), held in the venue's basement bunker the Hold, scene of one of the most thought provoking hip hop shows Skiddle has seen in 2014, the performance of Jonwayne back in April.

The Bar section of the venue will also feature a special afterparty, when some of the city's most well loved hip hop selectors will spin tunes related to the album, including No Fakin DJs, Madnice Soundsystem, Suede Brown and more. It's a precursor to an excellent festive period at the venue, as we noted here.

The album has proved a hotbed of creativity for DJs this year with a seemingly never ending supply of tribute mixes stitching together the tracks, samples and instrumentals that helped define the release. Our pick of the lot is from Solid Steel - stream that above - so expect similar aural treats on the night.
