Skiddle Mix 013: Jozef K (A Dawn Of A New Era/Apocalypse Mix)

Former Sankeys resident Jozef K delves into the deepest recesses of leftfield electronica for the thirteenth installment of our MIxcloud mix series.

Date published: 6th Aug 2013

Our latest mix comes from a familiar name but with a very unfamiliar concept. One of the residents of lost but not forgotten pillar of Mancunia Sankeys Jozef K has been a consistent fixture on these pages for a while, but this mix sees him imagining the bleakest of future scenarios – curating a soundtrack to the apocalypse.

We decided to get on the phone to him to press him on his motivations behind creating it:

Hi Joe! Tell us about this mix that you've done for us then?

Hey Skiddle guys, thanks for having me on board. I’ve considered doing something like this for quite a while, basically I recorded a mix in the idea that I am the only survivor of an apocalypse… maybe I had been having one too many late nights around the time I was doing it.

What inspired that?

People often ask me what is my dream set to play and this is it. My dream scenario would be that I survive the apocalypse alone, and play on a soundsystem that would be able to reach every orifice of a vast and barren Earth, no-one else could hear it but me, the dead landscape and the stars.

I hope listeners can visualize this atmosphere; I tried to put myself in this place as much as possible when working on it.

Can you see this being a series or something you return to in the future?

I am not sure yet, at the second it feels like something only to be done once, but I could be inspired again.

We spoke to you recently ahead of a gig for your EP launch; how did that go?

It went amazingly well! Had literally tonnes of requests for another party, the crowd went a bit crazy. They were all really feeling the music, all the guys (Ghosting Season, Means&3rd, Oliver Byrne) that came down played awesome sets.

An interesting anecdote about the party is that I secretly organized for some hoola-hoop dancers. I didn’t realize beforehand that they would take up half the dancefloor. Everyone was freaked out by it but it was very entertaining. Not my best idea, but I have had loads worse!

I did get a few strange glances from my mates during the performance, no-one expected it at all haha. It was pretty insane to see the whole room crammed into one side whilst two girls were dancing with Neon hoola hoops, I just thought fuck this and started playing tracks… Don’t think I will ever forget that one.

Is there a second event coming?

Yeah definitely! The last E.P. launch was too good, had loads of people asking about another show, aiming for tonnes more craziness again this time, got a few ideas, trying to make Fortsetzen about firstly the music but also the party. I am trying to explore as many senses possible in a nightclub environment, might even get some ghosts for the sxzth sense.

This next show will be the first time me + Winter Son play a full live show so fully excited for that!

And finally what else have you got lined up in the future?

Here’s a random list of what I’ve got coming up music wise in the order that they appear in my head. There’s a collaboration album with Winter Son currently in progress, and my Fortsetzen party is going monthly in the UK, the last Friday of the month deaf institute basement, and upcoming in Berlin as well.

I’m chasing down some guest vocals for a few tracks I’ve done, and I’ve got an EP with Winter sOn, one with us and another artist and then one just by myself all coming up. I’m playing in Ibiza twice next week, at Sankeys and also Usuhuaia, then a few UK shows and back to play Dimensions festival again early September. So yeah, pretty fucking busy at the minute!

Jozef K plays Carnival st Sankeys Ibiza this Saturday.
