This is the final edition of this summer's Future Headliners series. Over the last few weeks, we've been looking at some brilliant artists from a variety of genres who have the potential to be topping festival bills across the world. For the final edition, we're looking at one of the most hyped bands in the world right now; Wet Leg.
They seemingly came out of nowhere in 2021 with the release of their debut Chaise Longue. It immediately drew attention for its quick and funny lyrics, as we were introduced to a band who seemingly didn't have a care in the world. With that in mind, it didn't take them long to draw people in.
Quickly earning plays on radio stations such as BBC 6 Music, the Domino Records (Arctic Monkeys, Four Tet) band proved that they were no flash in the pan. They followed it up quickly by releasing Wet Dream, which saw them chastise someone for fantasising about them.
The dynamic between the band's two leading singers Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers sees them take a less than serious approach to the music industry. Not being uptight, they seem to be having fun with all aspects of making music which instantly gives them a sense of likeability.
After the success of those two earlier singles, the Isle of Wight band announced that their debut album was coming in 2022. The hype for the album was unbelievable, in such a short space of time they had gathered so many fans and it led to their emergence being compared to the likes of The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys.
Whether or not they'll have the same amount of success is yet to be seen but judging by the way their debut self-titled album was received, it's fair to say that they're definitely going places. Released in April, it doubled down on their sense of humour which is at times self-deprecating and proved that they were brilliant lyricists.
Packed full of hooks that wouldn't look out of place in the boom of 200's indie rock bands, they are currently helping to fly the flag for guitar music in the UK. The band have received accolades such as coming second in the BBC's Sound of 2022 poll and were recently nominated for the Mercury Prize (you can check out the nominees here).
All in all, it seems as though Wet Leg are destined for greater things. We believe there's nothing stopping them from reaching headliner level and their performances at festivals such as Glastonbury, where thousands flocked to see them, have shown that their music creates a truly joyous experience. If you get a chance to catch Wet Leg in a town or city near you, make sure you take the chance.
