It was glory to England in their first game of the World Cup as they brushed aside Iran 6-2. It can always be difficult to start a tournament when the nation expects you to perform but it didn't take too long for them to get off the ground. A fantastic header from Jude Bellingham started the scoring on the 35th-minute mark and England didn't look back after that.
Bukayo Saka scored a brilliant volley to make it 2-0 before a smart finish from Raheem Sterling. Saka scored again, Rashford finished cooly into the corner in his first involvement after coming on as a substitute and Jack Grealish had a tap-in after great play from Callum Wilson in the 90th minute. Arguably Iran scored the best goal of the game after Taremi thundered the ball under the bar. They also scored a late penalty which was a debatable VAR call.
Around the other games in the tournament so far, the hosts Qatar looked second best all game as Ecuador took an easy 2-0 win. The Netherlands played Senegal in a close encounter in group A. They are the two teams who are favourites to qualify and both looked unwilling to fully commit themselves. The deadlock was finally broken by a Gakpo header before a last-minute Davy Klaasen goal saw The Netherlands come out 2-0 winners.
Wales kicked off their campaign against the USA and it looked like they were heading for defeat after a disappointing first half that saw them 1-0 down. However, the introduction of Keiffer Moore changed the game and Wales looked much better. The pressure mounted and Wales finally won a penalty which Gareth Bale scored.
