Skiddle's open goal: A weekly roundup of football news and events

We had what is likely to be one of the shocks of the season this weekend when Manchester United went to visit Anfield. An unhappy place for them in recent years, there was more optimism surrounding their chances this time around given Liverpool's slump and their resurgence. 

After a close first half with few chances, Gakpo snuck in just before the whistle to finish cooly from a Roberston pass. The second half began and Gary Neville declared immediately that United wouldn't lose the game, five minutes later they were three goals down. Gakpo and Nunez saw the home side run away with it.

United were all over the place, getting ran ragged and further goals from Nunez, Salah and Firmino made for a record 7-0 scoreline. Manchester United crumbled completely and the crying of Bruno Fernandes will have been sweet for the Liverpool fan. He refused to track back, threw up his hands at his teammates constantly and gave what is probably one of the worst "captain" performances of all time, even throwing a tantrum when he wasn't taken off by his manager.

Elsewhere, Man City beat a slowly declining Newcastle side fairly easily, with goals coming from Foden and Bernardo Silva. It looked as though Arsenal were going to fall to a shock defeat to Bournemouth when they fell behind to Billing after just nine seconds. Further misery came after Senei scored from a corner. 

However, goals from Partey and White brought the tie level before Reiss Nelson scored an unlikely stunner, after latching onto the second ball from a corner. The scenes in the stadium were wild and it felt like a champion's performance. Brighton gave West Ham an absolutely miserable time on the South coast.

The Seagulls were their usual selves and are odds on for a Europa League place, if not better. The London side looked absolutely poor. Chelsea got back to winning ways with a narrow victory over struggling Leeds. Fofana heading in from a corner, Chelsea didn't look amazing but just getting a win was important enough.

It would appear that Spurs are going Spursy again, with their Champions League place very much under threat. They lost 1-0 to Wolves in deserved fashion, with Adama Traore providing a brilliant improvised finish. Tottenham need to pull themselves together or else they'll miss out on a European place that looked secure until recently.

There were important results at the bottom of the table as Southampton got a win over Leicester, which has seen them show a bit of fight when it really matters. Everton visited Notttingham Forest and if they got a result it would have been an important statement for Dyche's team.

Yet in a frantic affair, it finished 2-2, with Everton likely to see it as a missed opportunity to take all the points home. If you're looking for more footy action take a look at the events below.

Legends Charity Book Launch- Crossing The Park

When: Friday 28th April

Where: Hotel Anfield, Liverpool

This event will celebrate the release of 'Crossing The Park: The Men Who Dared To Play For Both Liverpool and Everton', a book about a controversial set of players. The proceeds will be going towards the Fans Supporting Foodbanks charity and Kevin Sheedy and Steve McMahon will be appearing in conversation.
