Skiddle's Open Goal: A Weekly Roundup of Football news and events
Here's our first 2022 roundup of the latest happening in the world of football.
Date published: 4th Jan 2022
We are back after the Christmas break for a rundown of the latest football news and in terms of the Premier League not a lot had changed in all honesty except from the fact that the title race is a lot more distant. With both Chelsea and Liverpool dropping more points and drawing in a thrilling encounter against each other, Manchester are absolutely away. Yes, the Manchester side look like the champions yet again with it looking very unlikely that they will lose another game.
In other news, Ralf Rangnick's Manchester United lost for the first time against Wolves in a result that was coming after a couple of poor performances in the games prior. Tottenham have been keeping up their fine form too with another win against Watford, the side now up to 6th in the table. The league does look like a bit of a mess right now with Covid postponements causing havoc.
It has also affected the other leagues in England too. In what was looking like a three-horse race has become wide open again as Fulham, Bournemouth and West Brom have all dropped points. This has allowed Blackburn to come out of nowhere and clinch second place after impressively hitting form at just the right moment. They'll be considered contenders even if Fulham have two games in hand on them.
With the January transfer window being open now, it'll be interesting to see how the lastest Covid waves affects the number of moves we see. All eyes will be on Newcastle as we await to see how much their new owners who "definitely" aren't the Saudi Arabian government invest in the squad. They've already been heavily linked with Keiran Trippier from Atletico Madrid.
