Skiddle's Open Goal: A Weekly Roundup of Football news and events

Skiddle's Open Goal brings you the latest from the Championship and AFCON this week.

Skiddle Staff

Last updated: 1st Feb 2022

This week there was no Premier League action as the Winter break came into effect. So all eyes were on the Championship and AFCON as we all still wanted that football fix. One of the biggest news stories coming out of the Championship was leaders Fulham dropping points after being in spectacular points. Blackpool were the surprise team that managed to get a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.

Fulham are still five points clear at the top of the table and they'll be hoping to go back to winning ways in their next game. Bournemouth got the most out of the weekend as they secured a narrow 1-0 victory away at Barnsley. West Brom suffered defeat against Millwall whilst Blackburn who have risen into title contention were halted by a 0-0 draw with Luton.

QPR were also able to make easy work of reading by beating them 4-o to maintain their promotion push. Meanwhile, in League One, Bolton hit Sunderland for 6, which immediately led to the sacking of Lee Johnson. The former Premier League side are still third however and still have a great chance of promotion.

In terms of the AFCON games, it was the quarter-final stage of the cup competition which saw Senegal, Egypt, Burkina Faso and Cameroon all progress to the semis. It looks as though it could be anyone's competition and we certainly don't want to bet on who will win it.
