Skiddle's Open Goal: A Weekly Roundup of Football news and events
Open Goal looks at the latest goings-on in the football world as we head towards the end of the season.
Date published: 3rd May 2022
In the most recent week of football fixtures, there was drama in each of the different battles that are taking place in the Premier League. It was a nervy Saturday for Liverpool who came out 1-0 winners away to Newcastle. They couldn't find a second goal despite having good chances which made for a nervy last ten minutes.
Manchester City took to the weekend in a much easier stride, coming out 4-0 winners away at Leeds. It's looking as tight as ever between the top two. At the other end of the table, Burnley kept up their impressive form since firing Shaun Dyche by beating fellow strugglers Watford who are now surely relegated.
It put all the pressure on Everton who suddenly found themselves five points behind Leeds and Burnley and they welcomed Chelsea to Goodison Park. Yet Chelsea have hit a stumbling block recently and were poor yet again, exemplified by captain Azpilicueta being robbed of the ball on the edge of his own box by Richarlison who put the ball straight in the back of the net. It was a massive lift for Everton and a hugely satisfying win for Frank Lampard.
In terms of the fight for the Champions League little changed as Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United won each of their fixtures. The most meaningful being Arsenal's win away at West Ham who likely won't be in the running for Champions League football next season. A special mention should go to Fulham who will be in the Premier League again next season after having a hugely successful Championship campaign.
Alexander Mitrovic broke the record for goals in a Championship season by scoring his 42nd and 43rd goals of the season as they beat Luton 7-0. It's an incredible achievement and we can't wait to see if he can improve his Premier League scoring tally. If you're looking for some football-related events then check out the list below.
