Skiddle's open goal: A weekly roundup of football news and events
Here's the latest news from the world of football.
Date published: 1st Mar 2023
This week's Open Goal is a tribute to one of the key men responsible for Manchester United's change of fortunes and that is Casemiro. The man has been an absolute force since he joined in the summer and United don't look the same without him in the team. He played a key part in their latest trophy gained at the weekend.
It was Casemiro who kickstarted United into action with his 33rd minute strike against Newcastle, which gave them a confidence boost and their first trophy since 2017 didn't look too much in doubt from that moment. Ten Hag has delivered the first smiles to United fans in quite some time. Newcastle on the other hand are clearly building a team that is going to be very exciting over the next few years.
In terms of the Premier League, Aston Villa grabbed a close 2-0 win over Everton to send the home side back into the relegation zone thanks to goals from Watkins and Buendia. Leeds got a crucial win over Southampton to keep their heads above water in the fight, leaving the Saints in a state of misery at the bottom.
Arsenal got back on track with a narrow win over Leicester, with Martinelli curling one into the bottom corner. West Ham remembered how to score goals again as they smashed Nottingham Forest 4-0. West ham fans will be relieved to see their side improving and new signing Danny Ings looking sharp.
Manchester City strolled to victory over Bournemouth, as Haaland got back on the scoresheet. In the big London derby of the weekend, Spurs got the edge over Chelsea, coming away with a 2-0 win. The first half was low on quality before Skipp's thunderous strike early in the second half got Spurs going.
It leaves Chelsea in a terrible position, as the performances only seem to be getting worse despite spending so much money on new players. With too many to choose from, Graham Potter has no clue what his best side is and losses just feel like a formality at the moment.
