Having built a reputation over the years for its discerning, exciting line ups, crammed with some of the most interesting producers working in music, it's with enormous anticipation that Soundwave returns this year. Housed on the gorgeous Dalmatian Coast, nestled in The Garden Tisno, a secluded beach set in paradisaic Croatian waters, Soundwaves location is as intoxicating as the line up and atmosphere it generates.
This year's line up is perhaps one of its finest yet, with some of the worlds most ingenious artists, DJs and beat makers descending on the festival to create the ultimate festival soundtrack.
Even the briefest of glances through Soundwave's bulging line up reveals an incredibly well thought out, intelligent bill, with the likes of increasingly notorious New Zealand seven piece Fat Freddy's Drop leading the way.
With the genre spanning live act in huge demand at festivals across the globe this year, it's a great coup to have them heading things up at Soundwave. Their trademark amalgamation of souflul, jazz inflected tones and vocals, encased in tape delays, echo chambers, with a pervading swampy blues stomp, has heralded in a fiercely unique sound that has finally emerged for the rest of the world to enjoy.
Another must-see comes in the shape of Stones throw stalwart, beat conducting genius Madlib. As one of the most unique, and prolific beat auteurs, the Los Angeles born multi instrumentalist and sampling wizard has become one of the most original voices in hip hop, jazz and everything in between.
Whether it's working with MF Doom in the incredible Madvillain project, or remixing the back catalogue of Blue Note Records (as soon above), Madlib's production never sees him put a foot wrong. His set at Soundwave will be one of the very few times you'll be able to catch him live. Miss this at your peril.
Other highlights include Mr Scruff, Gold Panda, Fun Lovin' Criminals' Huey Morgan, Dele Sosimi, Om Unit (above) and dub antagonist The Bug. Head here to check out the full line up - it's a belter, fillled with a collective of producers and artists that think outside the box, a welcome change from the usual festival fare. We simply can't wait for this year's Soundwave.
