Soup Kitchen's recent line ups have been absolutely staggering. Their focus on bringing the most freethinking, underground electronic artists to their Manchester home has been causing a serious buzz round the Manchester scene, with recent guests including Hessle Audio bosses Pangaea and Pearson Sound, broken techno saviour A Made Up Sound, warp records stalwarts Plaid and Livity Sound co-founder Kowton.
Following in much the same vein, Soup Kitchen's latest offering will bring the blissful, stripped back electronica of Pye Corner Audio (check out his LP Sleep Games above) to their Northern Quarter home on August 3rd.
The man behind the mysterious project - Martin Jenkins has been crafting some of the most absorbing examples of electronic music since 2010, thanks to his 'simplified studio setup' which he uses 'as a way to get away from the curse of choices that modern software makes available to you.'
His self released 'Black Mill Tapes' (later reissued on John Xela's lauded Type Records label) became a quiet success, lauded by the likes of Silent Servant and Minimal Wave's Veronica Vasicka for its dusty cinematic portayals of a dystopian future, inspired by everything from John Carpenter's soundtrack work to the BBC Radiophonic Workshops, via early Detroit techno and Kraftwerk.
His authentic, tape-warped palate is about as addictive as it gets, with ambience and texture being as carefully considered as melody and structure, leading to something that is impossible not to be seduced by.
All round sonic innovator Alessio Natalizia joins him under his Not Waving guise, bringing a darker, more frenetic edge to proceedings (hear that in his live set at Plastic People above). We can't recommend this show enough. Grab your Pye Corner Audio tickets here.
