Stormzy has taken the grime scene by storm since his rise to prominence in 2014, but now the multi-Mobo award winner is looking to reach out to other music cultures by exploring the music scene in South Africa.
The idea of the documentary, From South London to South Africa, came about when Stormzy met South African DJ and producer Muzi at a Nando's Music Exchange event in London this past September. They hit it off and Muzi invited the 22-year-old to make the trip to the African continent.
He learns about the the popular South African genre, gqom, a sound that he likens to funky house. In the broadcast, Muzi explains how tracks gain popularity:
"It's almost like they're the DJs (taxi drivers). If they think anything is hot, they're going to be playing it over and over. "Because of how many trips they do on a day-to-day basis, you could get hundreds of people hearing your song."
The documentary will drop in full on Thursday 19th November, via Noisey.
