Legendary names from the birth of hip hop, the Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Melle Mel of the Furious Five will tour the UK this summer. The original names in rap will appear at Club Academy in Manchester on Wednesday 29th May, Shankly Hotel in Liverpool on Saturday 15th June, Bootleg Social in Blackpool on Sunday 16th June, The Fleece in Bristol on Thursday 11th July, The Classic Grand in Glasgow on Friday 19th July and La Belle Angele in Edinburgh on Saturday 20th July.
The in house band for Sugarhill Records, Sugarhill Gang released what is widely regarded as the first hip hop single 'Rappers Delight' in 1979. It was to be their biggest solo hit, although the band went on to back many other groups on the label, including Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel & the Furious Five who had huge hits with hip hop's first socially conscious rap track 'The Message' and with 'White Lines (Don't Do It)'
The tour sees the core of both groups join up in a European excursion that celebrates 40 years since the release of 'Rapper's Delight'. It will be a rare opportunity to hear the very beginnings of the hip hop genre, performed as it was back in the day.
