Successful comedy duo Black Liver launch The Ferret’s 2022 theatre program with their hit comedy theatre show.
Labelled the “The White Stripes with laughs”, Black Liver’s new show Support Your Local Library: A Gothic Pub Rock Opera! mixes comedy and music for a rip-roaring night of entertainment which is perfect for Preston's leading independent music venue The Ferret.
The Ferret’s hugely successful performance nights – Preston’s only regular theatre program held on the last Thursday of the month – also include hit show Skank and comedian Jonny Pelham’s Off Limits.
Skank, which came to Preston in 2019, was a huge hit at Edinburgh Festival Fringe last year. Clementine Bogg-Hargroves’ bitingly funny one-woman show sold out across the UK and comes to Preston as part of the show’s last ever tour. It will be at The Ferret on Thursday, February 24.
Pelham’s Off Limits show blew away audiences at Edinburgh Fringe in 2019 and led to the comedian securing a spot on BBC2’s Live At The Apollo. Off Limits comes to The Ferret on Thursday, March 31.
And The Ferret will be a host venue for the Arts Council England funded Lancashire Fringe Festival which will take place in May this year. The festival was last held prior to lockdown in 2019 and welcomed some of the best performers and shows in the UK.
First up is Black Liver on Thursday, January 27. Their show took the festival circuit by storm last year. Black Liver are a musical duo, comedy double act and real-life couple Ruth E Cockburn and Keith Carter.
Support Your Local Library: A Gothic Pub Rock Opera! is an hour-long comedic rock opera that invites audiences on an insightful and entertaining journey along the shelves of their local library.
It is inspired by their own personal library experiences, stories in books and the people that read them, the origins and history of the public library and why they want to reminds everyone that the public library is just as relevant and vital to the community as it’s ever been.
Blackpool comedian Cockburn is already known to Preston audiences for her hit show Lover Letters From Blackpool which came to the city in 2018 as part of a national tour.

Cockburn said: “We've been traveling all over the country gigging and we love doing it. We were working in Liverpool on New Year’s Eve.
“But then we switch to this show and it is so different. Audiences love it. The music really gets them and it becomes a bit of a raucous party with some big laughs. I think that’s why the show did so well last year on the festivals circuit.
“After a year in lockdown we didn't know what to expect but the show has been so well received and the tour dates keep getting booked in fast.
“We love doing those festivals but could not turn down the opportunity of doing the show in such a respected music venue – The Ferret. We can't wait to bring the show to Preston.
