There is no greater pleasure than being blinded by the rainbow lights at Mint Club, especially when the soundtrack provided by two of the best in the business.
Starting back in 2008, over the years System. has developed a highly respected name for itself. It has never strayed from Mint Club and has never compromised on its a stellar booking policy that has been refined throughout the years.
As our anticipation built for this night, it was with slight caution we entered the club that evening with fears of overcrowding as heavily fuelled clubbers of Leeds poured into the space. In so many cases, endless tickets are sold without thought for the enjoyment of those once in there - but this night fell nothing short of perfect.
We only caught the end of Strobe Wax founders Annie Errez and Bobby O’Donnell’s set. It was a shame to miss the long-standing residents warming up, but rest assured they did sterling job providing low-slung groovers right upon entry. As drinks were bought, the ceilings flashed at 1am to summon us to the dance floor, for what was to be five hours of back to back live electronic madness.
Two impeccable headliners playing as one. Fed through a quality sound system to a noticeably genuine crowd. It was refreshing to see such a simple formula proving to be a step above some of the other clubbing experiences available in the thick of the city's dance scene.
Martin Buttrich and Guti were ready to bring the fiesta, opening up with a flurry of rolling latin beats. They fluttered between different sounds throughout the evening, showcasing the wide depth of musical knowledge from both parties.
For the first hour or so the pair were playful. As one build up dropped, a hypnotic interlude quickly crept in - they switched up the energy all night long. After this it was time for the darker beats, the raw-cut grooves with relentless drives.
Looking around you it was clear to see the sheer elation on attendee's faces. Surely, most of those who attended that night were no newcomers to the scene, with many amazing sets under their belts, but this sonic energy coupled with the pounding bleak strobes of the Mint Club celling meant that this was something special, and everyone knew it.
The end of the night took us down a rabbit hole and back to reality as again the duos fed the revellers melodic techno soundscapes to wind the crowd down, in a haze of rainbow mist thanks again to the highly effective production values of the club.
Although the word ‘journey’ often gets overused in reviews, we can think of no other way to describe what happened that night. System, Buttritch, Guti and the crowd that evening proved to be a musical match made in heaven.
