The 2023 BRIT Awards went down on Saturday. As usual, there were plenty of mad, funny, and shocking moments. We saw performances from huge names, watched artists fumble through acceptance speeches, and hosts mess up artists' names.
If you didn’t catch it, here are the highlights.
Harry Styles won everything

Harry Styles was nominated for four awards and took them all home. Are we surprised? Not in the slightest.
Sam Smith turned up in a bubbly gimp suit

Sam Smith has been everywhere recently. They smashed it out of the park with their performance of Unholy at the awards. But before that performance, Sam dropped jaws on the red carpet in a slightly bizarre outfit. We’ve seen weirder though, e.g Lady Gaga’s meat dress.
Mo Gilligan announced “Sam Capaldi’s” performance

Comedian Mo Gilligan hosted the BRITs this year. And when it was time for Lewis Capaldi to take to the stage, Mo got his name wrong, introducing “Sam Capaldi”. Naturally, Lewis was chill about it and posted a tweet of his head edited onto Sam Smith’s body.
Wet Leg referenced the iconic Arctic Monkeys speech from 2014
“That rock’n’roll, eh?” Wet Leg and Arctic Monkeys share the same record label, so them referencing Alex Turner's unforgettable speech makes sense. The band also had an expletive message for the Tories which no doubt sent the team behind the BRITs into a panic.
Loads of huge names performed
Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ performance was one of the highlights of the evening, as was Cat Burns. Lizzo, Stormzy, Wet Leg, Lewis Capaldi, Harry Styles, and David Guetta with Becky Hill, Ella Henderson, and Sam Ryder also took to the stage at various points in the awards. Wet Leg's performance featured Morris dancers and a giant owl, Lizzo did a medley, and Stormzy did two songs with a gospel choir.
Harry Styles acknowledged his privilege

Following backlash about his Grammy acceptance speech when he said, “this doesn’t happen to people like me very often,” Harry stated, “I'm very aware of my privilege” at the BRITs. He also took a moment to shout out the women who should’ve been nominated alongside him as the genderless Artist of the Year awards featured no women nominees this year. He also thanked One Direction and his mum for signing him up for X Factor.
Aitch might’ve shaded Harry Styles in his speech

When accepting his award, Aitch said, “Not to get all cliché but I just want to say not many people where I'm from, especially my side of Manchester, get the opportunity to stand up here and receive such an amazing gift or award.” Some people think this was a dig at Harry Styles for saying, “I'm just so - this doesn't happen to people like me very often and this is so, so nice" at the Grammys. But who knows?
