Much has been said about the vinyl revival, which after record sales last year is very much here and in full swing, but less covered is the return of the cassette tape, with a glut of cassette only labels surfacing in the last 12 months alone.
Liverpool psychedelic rock quintet are the latest to embrace the ferric format, calling on fans to send in their old cassettes to be taped over by their forthcoming LP Distance Inbetween - their first new material in five years. Relive their Glastonbury 2007 performance below.
Vocalist James Kelly said "Home taping didn’t exactly kill music, but we know it caused some horrible collections of music to be compiled, so it’s time for an amnesty... Now is the time to dig into drawers, cupboards and boxes and admit to cassette crimes, or offer up the bad decisions of friends, relatives and lovers who made tapes that should never, ever be heard again."
The album is set for a proper release on cassette, with the band falling in love with the sound of old tape. "The format has an underrated life all of its own, so we’re doing our bit to restore its respectability."
You can send your dusty old mix tapes to The Coral, PO Box 29479, NW1 6GG for reprogramming.
