The Levellers: DVD Review + Tour Dates!

Of course you do. For a band that pushed folk into punk territory oh so many years, and yet still have the cheek to be as good, The Levs are all about doing what they do best – and it’s all about the live stuff. I love their albums, always have done, always will. But live, now that’s where they shine beyond, oh, words, which is very handy given that on this hefty package of 2 dvds, there’s two gigs; one full stage, the other, stripped down and acoustic. Released on their own On The Fiddle Recordings, they’ve been able to put out a package that they’re proud of. Disc 1 features a blistering full-scale gig from back in March at the Reading Hexagon. Meanwhile, Disc 2 has a 2004 live acoustic set from Buxton Opera House featuring Rev Hammer and Nick Harper, along with band interviews and various bits of uneen stuff. The highlight of this disc, however, has to be the fantastic footage of their headliner slot at the their own fest, Beautiful Days, featuring none other than Billy Bragg and with an introction from Mr. Nice Himself, Howard Marks, of nothing but songs by The Clash to celebrate the late Joe Strummers birthday. In short, for a 2 disc set, we’re talking a night in with the tv so get some beers in, because it’s 2006 and while The Levellers are a bit older and wiser, they still remain giants of the cause for independence and let’s face it, we all know the songs back to front so feel free to sing at the back.
