IAs we head into the crispness of Autumn, hazy summer nights drinking in beer gardens and reveling at festivals seem like long, sweet, distant memories. While we've been processing the sanction that the sun is now dead, promoters have been sourcing artists and venues to make sure our summer woes are pinched before we go into hibernation mode. With the reappearance of students back in the city, there is a buzz about the place which has been rolling over into the enthusiasm for clubbing.
The first week of October kicks the month off in great stead with the reappearance of Abandon Silence on the 3rd. Being held in the East Village Arts Club, it's recognizable the extent that this club night has grown, blossoming into a size vast enough to coat the large venue.
The weekend welcomes another substantial Freeze appearance in the labyrinth that is Williamson Tunnels. Hernan Cattaneo, Danny Howells (read our interview with him here) and Jemmy are all set to play the Dig Deeper event set inside the historic emblem on the 5th. Kissy Sell Out headlines Subvert at Revolution Albert docks on the same night if you’re after something that’s less ‘rave in a cave’, more ‘sleek and sassy’. Read my review of Hannah Wants and Grum at Subvert from when I went in August to give you an idea.
The week that follows sees another array of parties with two completely different but equally as spectacular events at the East Village Arts Club. Chibuku offers a ridiculous line up with Erol Alkan, George Fitzgerald and Eli & Fur set to play the event on the 12th. A strong collection of artists that have been prominent throughout the summer, expect warm bassy electro with rich caramel undertones and cinnamon induced pop vocals for a spicy kick.
The 10th sees another night hit the HAUS Warehouse, originally starting in Manchester, LOLiFE brings the incredible No Artificial Colours to Liverpool along with support from head honcho Lauren Lo Sung. While the 17th sees the return of Less Effect following an incredible launch night last month. Heading back to the populous HAUS Warehouse, envisage two rooms of house, techno and rupturing bass for a mid week treat.
The end of the month sees thousands begin to panic as Novemeber closes in and we welcome (with fear) Halloween. I’ve decided not to list a selection of Halloween events because the thought of dressing up in a bodge job costume covered in fake blood makes me cringe. I admire the effort involved for those who are passionate; I would just rather carve a pumpkin into a little spooky face and be on guard for trick or treaters.
If I were to suggest one party to go to though it would be the mUmU Halloween party with Pan Pot, Nick Hoppner and Tom Demac. mUmU parties are always immense so that will be a great night with good music. This kicks off on Saturday 26th with more info to be announced.
And of course the same night sees the annual Circus Halloween party… fancy dress here isn’t compulsory but you will look out of place without it, particularly as year on year the guest DJs themselves get in the spirit. Heidi, Nick Curly, DJ W!ld and many more could be donning the fancy dress this time round.
This month’s fiery golden ticket goes to the Manchester born nine piece Riot Jazz who are set to make a galvanizing appearance in the city at The Kazimer on the 26th October. Support comes from hip-hop production team The Mouse Outfit and a DJ set from Rich Reason.
Their upbeat, happy and toe tapping rhythms make it very hard not to dance along to the catchy ‘Corn on the Cob’ and ‘Wey Oh!’ both from their new album ‘Sousamaphone’ released this August. This summer took the group to Parklife Festival, Shambala Festival, Kendal Calling and various Jazz festivals around the UK. With success brewing softly alongside ingenuity and energy, expect to see a lot more from these gold spangled brass boffins and their enigmatically good grooves.
